Amazing Looking Building

Originally a hostel and hospital for pilgrims at the very end of the Way of St James, this building is now a hotel. Thats to the royal patronage of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, the building is richly adorned. Masons, engineers, and sculptors from all over Europe helped to create this work of Plateresque architecture. The most impressive aspect of the exterior is the facade to the entrance with the Plateresque arch and Gothic border, decorated with the apostles, the evangelists, the figures of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand on either side of the door. An amazing landmark in Plaza del Obradoiro.

    Location, location, location
Argueably the best location for a 5 star hotel that I have stayed in, and we have stayed in many. Located on the city's main square in the "old town" opposite the cathedral which is the principal reason people visit this city at the end of a long Camino walk. We booked this hotel as a component part of an overall package. I mention this as the advertised rate for this hotel is approx $360 per night, we paid $155 a night, it always feels better when you have managed to get a good deal. The building originates from the 11th century and it did not start off life as a hotel, it has had many functions. The hotel infuses history, wide corridors lined with antique furniture, large courtyards with water fountains and greenery. Rooms are in an old style but highly functional as is the bathroom. Rooms look a little tired and could be spruced up. Some staff were extremely friendly and helpful, some not so. After you have walked the Camino, if you can afford it, a bit of luxury and pampering does make the Camino experience complete. Recommended.

    A bucket list experience
A beautiful historic building of special significance to us at the end of our Camino. Our room was large, clean and well appointed with furniture of the appropriate era, writing desk, decorative carved wood and velvet padded chairs. Very good beds, nice linen, comfortable mattresses. Large bathroom with all amenities. Our room opened to one of the beautiful courtyards, which contained plentiful historic information on the decorative wall mounted plaques. Only downside was the squeaky floor boards through out the building, we were not disturbed by other guests movements so hopefully we did not disturb others! Would recommend for historical significance, comfort and position.
