  2. 4.0 Akershus Castle and Fortress (Akershus Slott og Festning) (3.212 reviews)
    - A stunning place, one of the highlights of Oslo

Akershus Castle and Fortress (Akershus Slott og Festning) image
Akershus Castle is in a prominent position overlooking Oslofjord to the east of Pipervika. Construction of the castle started in 1299 during the reign of King Håkon V. The castle was then developed into a fortress in 1592 and then fifty years later rebuilt into a renaissance castle. Having enjoyed past visits to Castle and Fortress we decided to visit the site again. The Fortress grounds are substantial and to walk around them there is no fee but there are guided tours on Saturdays and Sundays for an extra cost. It is a labyrinth of walkways, arches and steps and on the western ridge there are some lovely views of the harbour area of Oslo. It is one of highlights in the city and is easy to get to being a short walk from the city centre. See more..
  3. 4.0 Oslo City Hall (2.778 reviews)
    - Magnificent City Hall - Great Location - Amazing Artwork and Murals - Inside and Outside
Wednesday: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Government Buildings
    Oslo City Hall image
This is my favorite building in Norway. City Hall in Oslo is fantastic both outside and inside. The woodcuts outside tell a story and the entrance is magnificent. Inside there is so much space and room to breathe. The gigantic wall to wall murals review Norway's history and future. Rooms on the second floor are full of artwork from local artists and the art fills the rooms. On one hall, gifts from other countries are displayed in glass display cases. A super interesting exhibit to browse for sure! Outside the back of city hall is a magnificent view of the harbor. City Hall is a great place to relax and enjoy everything that is offered. Expect to spend a couple of hours exploring. If you only have time to visit one place in Oslo, this is the place to go. Oh, and it is free, as it is a working government building. Don't miss it! - Birthplace of Norwegian Constitution -- well worth a visit
Wednesday: 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
Eidsvoll 1814 Norwegian Center for Constitution image
After 6 weeks of negotiations the 112 Eidsvoll men affirmed their unity with the oath "Faithful and true until Dovre falls!" on 20 May 1814. Their mission was completed: they had declared Norway a free and independent nation after more than 4 centuries of union with Denmark. The foundations for democracy in Norway had been laid. 200 years later, we celebrate the Eidsvoll Men's achievement. As the key venue for the bicentenary celebrations, Eidsvoll 1814 is delighted to welcome thousands of visitors to a museum that offers a wealth of things to do and see, all on truly historic ground. Our objective has been to create an inclusive commemoration, with events and visitor activities that also reflect the Norway of today. At the centre of these celebrations is the government's gift to the constitutional bicentenary - the newly restored Eidsvoll House. With handsome furnishings and exuberantly colorful textiles and wall coverings in keeping with Carsten Anker's elegant interior designs, the home of the Norwegian Constitution stands ready to welcome new generations. Together with a new and modern democracy center, a museum shop featuring commemorative items, culinary delights from our own 'Taste of 1814' menu, fascinating and enjoyable guided tours, and a host of special events, we hope to make this a memorable celebration of democracy and representative government through 200 years.
