Great fun

CosmoCaixa offers its visitors a whole host of activities and permanent and temporary exhibitions to give anyone who is interested a greater insight into the world of science. The museum’s most distinctive attractions include the new permanent exhibition “The Universe Gallery” where visitors can learn about the cosmos and its evolution from the big bang to the present day. An interactive experience beginning with the creation of the cosmos and going on to explore the evolution of the species and the innermost workings of the human brain. The "Flooded Forest” recreates the ecosystem of the Amazon inside a glass house covering an area of 1,000 m2, which is home to piranhas, crocodiles and other animal and plant species typical of the area, and the “Geological Wall” consists of seven vast sections of genuine rock that allow us to interpret the world’s geology.

A bit of a hidden gem from a tourist perspective (but well worth the trip up the hill!)
A very interesting an interactive science museum. Although our son is almost three years old and could not understand most of the exhibits, he loved it. The submerged rainforest is quite of a surprise, and absolutely amazing you would not expect to find this here (if you take the other exit from the main square, you walk over it from the outside). Level -5 hosts most of the interesting exhibits, explaining our universe and the origin of life. This is were we spent most of the time, but I did had the feeling we have missed about 40% of other things to see. From a visiting tourist perspective, this museum is perhaps a bit of a hidden gem that mostly caters to locals. Located on the outskirts out town under the hill at Avenida Tibidabo, it's about 30 - 45 minutes by car or 45 - 60 minutes by public transport from 'down town' Barcelona. But it was definitely worth the visit and for just €6 entrance free (from 16 years and older) it was great value for money. My only point of negative feedback was that it took three sets tickets before the gates worked and we were granted access. The gate for pushchairs did not work at all so we had to lift our pushchair over the barrier.

Excellent once you climb the hill and find it
The museum is located in a very up-scale neighborhood up the side of the mountains overlooking the city. The metro stop is located a “7 minute” walk from the museum—if you are young and very healthy or a mountain goat who has access to a good GPS or Satnav system. The number 15 bus stops right in front of the museum. During our visit there were many school groups present ranging in age from primary school through secondary school. Some were very well behaved and engaged with the exhibits while others (junior and senior high school students primarily) were acting like typical teen agers who were more interested in impressing their classmates and being “cool” than in anything they might have learned. The exhibits were extremely well thought out and organized. Explanations were provided in four languages at a level that was generally informative and that did not “talk down” to more well informed visitors. Exhibits included material on physics, evolution (plant, animal, geological and human) and astronomy. Food was available at reasonable prices. Restrooms were spotless. We did not have to wait at the entrance or to buy tickets. I recommend the museum to anyone with an enquiring mind.
