    XQ Hand Embroidery image
If you have any appreciation at all for handcrafts, do not miss this gem. Free to visit, the only downside of this museum/workshop/gallery is that these artworks (which can take several women months, if not years, to complete) aren't better displayed and curated. Although we spent less than an hour here, this was an absolute highlight for me of our visit to Hue. Magical. See more..

    Tomb of Minh Mang image
On the day we visited it seems we were the only tourists. A movie was being shot with a large film crew and it was easy to see why. This is a stunning complex and having seen kyoto and Angkor Wat, feel this has much to show the visitor. Be careful their is a local couple who have linked Google maps to their home as the entry. Check your entrance as it's not via a private house despite what the sign says See more..
  12. 4.5 Tomb of Khai Dinh (1.179 reviews) from $11.00
    - Beautiful Blend of Asian & Western Influences; Impressive Setting
Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Tomb of Khai Dinh image
The Royal Tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh is an impressive monument situated in an imposing site nestled high on the mountainside. Construction commenced in 1920, and was completed by the Emperor's son in 1931; the Emperor having died of tuberculosis in 1925. This is the smallest, yet most costly of the Nguyen Royal Tombs. Construction costs were so high that the National tax was raised 30% to cover the expense of the unpopular Emperor's final resting place. 127 steps lead the visitor up to the tomb in an act of worship. Inside, walls and ceilings are artfully detailed. The structure uses concrete and is wired for electricity, but overall the building has both Asian and European influences. The most beautiful and intricately detailed room contains the Emperor's remains, where there is so much to take in. Expansive views of the lush valley are serene and add to the prestigious location and positioning of the Tomb. See more..
  13. 4.5 Royal Tombs (956 reviews)
    - Must see when in Hue
    Ancient Ruins • Cemeteries
    Royal Tombs image
We booked a tour with a Bee Bee Travel and had a guide and driver to visit 4 major tombs. It was well worth it, as the tombs are located outside of the city and without a guide you end up looking at a lot of ancient buildings with little frame of reference. We started with Thieu Tri, went to Minh Mang, Khai Dinh and ended with Tu Duc. I think this was a perfect way to see the tours as they were all very varied and the progression was well done. Thieu Tri is still unrestored and parts of it are only ruins so its good to start there and work oneself up. See more..
  14. 4.5 Imperial Tomb of Dong Khanh (588 reviews)
    - Beautiful quiet tomb complex
    Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites
Imperial Tomb of Dong Khanh image
Not a popular tomb complex but it’s beautiful. We had the place to ourselves at 8.30am. There is lots to see here. Restoration work was happening in one area. There are several tombs spread out over the grounds - just follow the brick paths. Nice temple too with red and gold interior. 50,000 Dong entrance fee. See more..

This is worth a day out if you are on a budget, as its free to enter. Again we had our guide take us through and give us some great information about this place. We did not expect to see the blue car there either, and why it is there. Again a beautiful place to walk around. See more..
  17. 4.5 Bach Ma National Park (307 reviews)
    - 5 lakes adventure trail in rain without guide
Tuesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours National Parks
    Bach Ma National Park image
Me and my partner did the 5 lakes adventure trail during rain and without guide. Even though it was a bit slippery and at one point a bit hard to find the right trail it was definitely worth it and easy without guide. Once at the National park you get a map and pay entry (60k) and the woman working there speaks English and explains what route you should take. The easiest is to start up at the restaurant and walk down. Although we did it the other way around and therefore had a bit of a struggle finding the right turn off to the trail (it’s through the pavilion on the pavement walk). The whole walk is clear to see and marked with signs, ladders and ropes. You walk next to amazing waterfalls and heaps of small lakes you can swim in! See more..
  18. 4.5 Nine Dynastic Urns (177 reviews)
    - Major Attraction within the Temple Enclosure
Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Nine Dynastic Urns image
The Imperial City at Hue has only partially been restored, but, even so, it's pretty impressive. In one corner of the Imperial City lie the temples, some for the public and some for the Imperial Family. In the heart of the temple complex is the To Mieu temple honoring ten Nguyen Emperors. Each has his own altar. In front of the temple is a large courtyard where you will find the nine dynastic urns dedicated to the same emperors. Each tripod urn is of solid bronze and stands above even the tallest visitor. They are richly decorated with bas reliefs of auspicious symbols. It is of interest to some visitors that during the American War, the Imperial City was the location of a fierce battle against the Viet Cong. You can still see rubble where palace buildings once stood and if you look carefully, you can find bullet holes in some of these urns. It must have been a frightful experience for the people who lived in Hue at the time. See more..
  19. 4.5 The Mieu Temple (129 reviews)
    - Commemorates Royal Ancestors
    Religious Sites
    The Mieu Temple image
Built in 1821 under the direction of Emperor Minh Mang, this structure commemorates the previous Emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty, with portraits and shrines dedicated to each Emperor. An expansive courtyard sits in front of the Temple. The nine Dynastic funerary urns are located between the Mieu Temple and the Hiem Lam Pavilion. The center urn which is the largest, commemorates Emperor Gia Long, the first Emperor of the Nguyen Dynasty, and the creator of the Citadel. The Temple was damaged by fire, but has been beautifully restored. See more..
  20. 4.5 Thuy Tien Lake (120 reviews)
    - Abandoned Water Park - a good trip for 1-2 hours
Spent 1-2 hours Bodies of Water
    Thuy Tien Lake image
It’s pretty easy to get to here. We were met by three individuals (who we thought were ‘security’) who asked for 20k dong, which we paid. After being at the dragon slide for like 5 minutes we heard a whistle, which turned out to be ‘actual security’. He first told us 40k each, but before we could answer he just told us to go (even though other people arrived and we informed him we paid already). So we took out bikes back to the entrance, waited a couple minutes then walked back around without seeing him again. It’s deffo worth the trip as it’s different to usual site-seeing and quite interesting. Just be wary & prepared to pay 40k dong as it isn’t 20k anymore, unless you can avoid security ;) See more..

  24. 4.5 Hai Van Pass (66 reviews)
    - A thrilling road and awesome views of South China Sea blue waters!
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Scenic Drives
    Hai Van Pass image
Riding through "Hài Vân Pass" and its winding roads, sudden curves and blind corners can be quite a thrill! On National Route 1, the 21 km long mountain pass crosses over the Truong Son Range and juts into South China Sea, overlooking Son Tra Island. It used be the border, during centuries, between the ancient kingdoms of "Dai Viêt" and "Champa". At the top of "Hài Vân Pass", Emperor Minh Mang built, in the 19th century, an outstanding brick gate, which is surrounded by scattered bunkers dating from the first Indochina War (or the French War, as called by the Vietnamese). These bunkers were later used by the American forces during the Vietnam War (or the American War). A quick stop, a few pictures and back to this thrilling road through awesome "Hài Vân Pass"! Enjoy! 25. 4.5 Huyen Tran Princess Temple (62 reviews)
    - A hidden gem
Spent More than 3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Huyen Tran Princess Temple image
This place is a hidden gem and not many of the locals seem to know it. We paid a driver for the day to take us various places and he had to follow his sat nav! There seems to be regular tombs and temples in Hue on the tourist trail (some free/some not), but are always crowded. By comparison this beautiful site just outside the city costs a matter of pence to enter and is a beautiful haven of peace, tranquility and stunning architecture, pools and carvings. It is a huge site and you could spend hours there. Apart from the man at the gate I saw no one else there. How this is not more well known is amazing to me. See more..

City of Ghosts - An Bang Cemetery image
Difficult to grasp the scale of this cemetery and individual graves from photos. Definitely a highlight for us on our trip to Vietnam. We used Adventure Journey out of Hue to visit. They seemed to be one of the very few companies we could find to take us there. Our driver Mr Hong had exceptionally good English and was a fantastic guide rather than a driver. He also seemed happy to wait for as long as we needed to soak up the atmosphere and photograph this breath taking place. See more..
  29. 4.5 Lap An Lagoon (6 reviews)
    - Loved this place. It's very special at sunset
    Bodies of Water
    Lap An Lagoon image
We happened upon this place due to a local guide. We'd intended to just visit Lăng Co beach but, in the end, we preferred the lagoon more. Try to visit at sunset as it's absolutely magical. We ate at the Lagoon Cafeteria (reviewed elsewhere) which I'd highly recommend as an authentic experience or just buy some fresh oysters and bbq them. Wonderful too. I'd return in a heartbeat and it will always live in my memory. See more..
