legend surronds the origins of the church of the mother of god in hah; its foundation is linked directly with the birth of jesus: twelve kings came from the east, following a star which they understood as sign of newborn king in the land of judah they came to king hanna of hah and sent on from there only three of their number to jarusalem the three kings fount the child and offered him their gifts as a keepsake they recevied on of the child's swaddlingbands when yhey arrived back at hah they were unwilling to cut the strip of cloth into pieces they pieces they decided to burn it and share out the ashes amongst themselvesinstead the fire turned the cloth into twelve golden medallions seeing this miracle the kings decided to build a memorial in honour of the mother of god a building which would endure until the end of the world the field nevt to the pond at hah called parpuso (shredded)is believed to be where the miracle happened See more..

This culturel and historical tour with Utku and Berdan was very effective and enjoyable. Especially visiting Mardin and its surroundings with comfortable and personal car offered a more friendly atmosphere. Their gastronomic advise and shopping support were also very successful. Thanks for this beautiful tour that I am satisfied with and will definitely recommend. See you in the next round, take care See more..

- 5.0 Fırat Silver (5 reviews)
-Great selection of pieces
Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
We were looking for a handmade telkari, a traditional silver craftsmanship that was brought to the region by Armenian artisans. They had a great selection there along with antique rings for both men and women. We ended up getting a beautiful necklace, the staff is very helpful and educated. Highly recommend the place if you are looking for handmade unique accessories. See more..
- 5.0 Ayse Yildiz (4 reviews)
-Do not miss this tour
Multi-day Tours • Private Tours • Wine Tours & Tastings • Day Trips
I had such an amazing time with Ayşe. Not only did she show me parts of Old Town I hadn’t seen, her extensive knowledge of history and current events were far more informative than any of the articles I’d read about the region. Her ability to explain the culture and history of each location we visited was really special and I felt she was more like my friend welcoming me to her home town than a tour guide. I can’t recommend her enough for any tour and I can’t wait to be back and explore more of the region with her See more..

- 4.5 Deyrulzafaran Monastery (699 reviews)
-Faith, as it is lived
Churches & Cathedrals
Understated, solemn but most of all, still functioning. I was in Deyrulzafaran Monastery on 10 November for roughly 2 hours and had the place all to myself. The rooms, architecture and icons of worship are all stunning, and the guide did a great job explaining the difference in Syriac Orthodox and other Christian beliefs. It's humbling when you realise more an a millennium of heritage and hard work surrounds you. Entrance fee was 6 TL as of Nov 2014. There are two roads to get to Deyrulzafaran Monastery on foot (< 6km) - the road through Eskikale village and the Mardin-Nusaybin road. I walked there via the high Eskikale road, and returned by the latter. The Eskikale road has no signs for the monastery, while the latter has one at a turn-off. The Mardin-Nusaybin road is very hilly so pace yourself if you aren't very fit. Both roads offer great views of the old town of Mardin. See more..
- 4.5 Dara Mesopotamia Ruins (374 reviews)
-Well worth it - ancient Roman site
Ancient Ruins
I went on a tour of Dara with a guide, which was necessary considering its location and the four sites within Dara. The cisterns are more spectacular than the one in Istanbul, and touring the tombs is like visiting a city underground. I highly recommend Ali Amak, who is based in Mardin and organizes tours in southeastern Turkey. He was recommended by another guide who was unavailable - we visited Midyat, Mor Gabriel, Nusaybin, Mardin, Deyrulzafaran Monastery, and I added an extra day with him to see Diyarbakir. Ali's email is [email protected] and he can be reached via WhatsApp (+90 543-881-2474) See more..

-Neat museum with great architecture
Speciality Museums
Set in the midst of old town Mardin this is a very interesting museum with a nice display of local artifacts found in the area. While the interior is similar to such museums with ancient pottery items, coins, figures,...etc the exterior architecture I found the most interesting and beautiful. Entry fee is very cheap and there're great views of Mardin and Mesopotamia plains. See more..
- 4.5 Zinciriye Medresesi (161 reviews)
-The Madrasah with spectacular views
Historic Sites
There are two Madrasah you should visit in Mardin - the Kasimiye and this one. While Kasimiye is located in Mardin outskirts (read that review), Zinciriye dominates the town standing on top of it, below the fortress. Zinciriye was built in 14c in a beautiful Persian ornamental style. Both were very important educational centers for both, religion and science. A short steep climb from the main street will reward you with absolute best views of Mardin and Mesopotamia plains. See more..
- 4.5 Midyat Old City (134 reviews)
-a charming old town in a district of Mardin!
Historic Sites
this is a charming and very historic old town in a district of Mardin about 30 minutes from old Mardin town. the best part of Midyat - old town is the small narrow streets that are filled with old homes, mosques, churches and old bazaars and markets. they are doing a ton of work all over town to make it even more appealing to travelers. If you stay here Old Town is the most charming part and it is as you might guess next to the most modern part. See more..

Mardin is like a fairy tale, like a painting, so many details to see, lovely, helpful and friendly people everywhere. Walk through the lovely streets to Mor Behnam (Kirklar) church, stroll along the "main street", the jewel shops are incredible, so are the varieties of coffee brands, soaps and all kinds of local products (like sumac). Eat local specialities like "icli köfte" (wheatballs filled yith spicy minced beef) or filled ribs. Mayhurma is a unique desert you can get only in Mardin, made of dates and grape syrup. The archeological museum is small, but even worthwile to visit because of it's beautiful building. Beautiful artifacts! See more..

Neighborhoods
Kıllıt (Kelith) village Killit village, which is called as the paradise of Tur Abdin region, where 3 different sects and churches of the ancient Syriac people (Yakubians, Protestant Asyriac, Catholic Asyriac) are located together. kıllıt village is a village of the town of savur, which is one of the important settlements of the Tur Abdin region and is now connected to the province of Mardin. The word savur is a word used in Syriac language and the Syriacs use the word savro. They were built as a result of the 19th century Protestant missionary activities. Apart from the Mor Yuhanon church, which is the oldest church in the village, there are the ruins of Mor Abay, Mor Theodotus, and Mor Dimet monasteries on the north side of the village, which are only in ruins today. The Mor yuhanon church, which is mentioned in the 4th century in some sources and in the 7th century in some sources, is one of the oldest village churches in the region of Tur Abdin. A few bishops and metropolitans came out of the Mor Yuhanon Church. Mor Abay Monastery, located in the north of the village, was built in the name of the Iranian martyr Aziz Abay, who played a major role in the spread of Christianity in the region and was killed by his father (4th century BC). - 4.0 Sabanci City Museum (145 reviews)
-Really worth visiting
Art Museums
This museum is only a few years old, and the love that went into creating it is palpable. They have collected daily items from the area, tools and household items, things that could be lost to history if not treasured here. Photographs show the costumes of the various ethnic inhabitants. As you see from the photo of the workman, you could almost believe that you are watching a live person. Downstairs are temporary exhibits. When we visited we saw photographs taken throughout the 20th century from all over Turkey. I highly recommend visiting. The archaeological museum in town has fantastic pieces, but we found the city museum very moving. See more..

- 4.0 Saint Hirmiz Chaldean Church (13 reviews)
-Beatiful and Charming
Spent < 1 hour Churches & Cathedrals
We were walking back on the main street and saw this Catholic Church and were taking pictures. It wasn't open at first, but our guide checked with a nearby person and soon we were able to get inside for a small fee. It is beautiful and peaceful. The one "downside" was that a man began giving an extended story about the church in Turkish, so we stayed and listened. (Fortunately our guide translated some of the material, but the man talked for over 20 minutes) See more..
