I visited the Ethnographic Village, a part of a larger complex with park, zoo, war memorials etc The ethnographic village represents the diversity of nationalities living in Kazakhstan, with replica of houses from many nationalities. The place looks well maintained, beautiful gardens outside each house and the exterior and interior showing unique character from each country. Unfortunately some of the houses were closed when I visited the place, nevertheless - it was worth every minute. There was a Jurt as well, and this was opened up to allow me to see it, a very nice exhibition inside. Certainly a “must see” when in Oskemen A huge thank you to the taxi driver Anton - who took me here - and who decided to come in with me - using Google Translate to explain where every house came from. The Zhambyl Zhabayev Park in Oskemen is a beautiful little park with lovely green space, lots of flowers in bloom when we were there, birds and small wildlife and probably one of the cleanest parks I have ever been to! It’s not a bad thing at all so it shows a nice level of pride that the city has for its parks, we had a picnic and an enjoyable time relaxing in the sun and watching the world go by. See more..

Driving up to Oskemen we took time to check out Kiin Kirish Canyon near Kurchum/Kurshim. It was a bit out of the way but as we had some extra time and spare tires in case of flats we ventured on some less than great roads to get there. Once there it was spectacular. Virtually untouched areas with little hamlets/towns/settlements dotting the landscape, beautiful colors in the rocks that don’t look real but they are and local fauna everywhere. There is not much else out here so if you want lots of touristy things then this isn’t for you, if you are an adventurer and want to see some remote places with peace, solitude and good hiking then this is what you have been looking for but come prepared. There are apparently two Ethnographical museums across from each other next to Zhastar Park in the middle of Oskemen. We were unaware there were two, so we went to just one, that contained a really beautifully furnished yurt and many lovely textiles, costumes, and jewelry. It is a small inexpensive museum, but very rewarding to visit, better, I thought, than the Almaty museums. See more..

Последняя реставрация его, правда, опростила. Этот розовый цвет ему не идет, звери дурацкие. Смотрите на старых фотографиях, как он должен выглядеть.

Очень красивое место выбрали для храма, потрясает вид, горы и рядом плотина Аблакетка, поют птицы, свежий воздух и умиротворение, наверное лучшее место в городе, летом - цветы. Само здание изначально строили японцы под дом культуры, с возражением православия решено было сделать этот дом храмом. Очень рекомендую всем православным посетить Богородице-рождественский храм, от города есть автобус. See more..

We visited this museum as part of an arranged tour, and were the only guests. The museum has been open since 1972, and the quality of exhibits was excellent. The museum guide spoke english and was very enthusiastic about the exhibits. A bust of Igor Kurchatov is the first exhibit,. The museum details the effects of the nuclear testing at the nearby Polygon site. There is a replica of the control machine that was used to detonate the first Soviet atomic bomb. This is a great photo op, as the equipment has flashing lights, and you can sit and pretend to detonate the bomb. One of the best exhibits was the model of the Polygon site, which showed how the test site was arranged prior to detonation. The display of the results of the test on animals will be difficult to view for the squeamish. Jars containing various parts of animals were arranged to show the effects of burns and exposure to a nuclear blast.A huge fragment of a granite stone, which was melted and shiny, showed the effects of the high temperature of the blast.We were really impressed with the ancient industrial camera that could take hundreds of pictures in a short time frame to document the effect of the nuclear tests. The tour ends with a display of photos of the persons responsible for the tests including Stalin, Beria and Kurchatov. Another unique photo op awaits here, as there is a model of Kurchatov's office, and you can take a photo sitting at his desk. A sample of rocks is near to the entrance. This museum was excellent. It should be noted that this is a functioning research centre, so you should be quiet whilst walking the corridors. The building housing the museum, is a faded green, and Soviet styled. You will pass another monument to Kurchatov,a bronze bust on a pedestal, on the way back to the security checkpoint. To see what the fuss was about, we ducked in to the Holy Trinity Monastery when we were in town earlier this month. It is a stunning property, the detail and elegance of it all was astounding. There was a service of some kind happening and we were ushered into a pew at the back which was fine. We had no idea what was being said but it was over about 10minutes later and we were able to look around and made a donation to the church as well. Beautiful inside and out, take the time to see it. Checked out the Art Museum of Nevzorovyh in Semey about a week ago. It is free to get in and displays mostly European and Russian works but a few Kazakh ones as well. Nicely laid out, not much English signage but easy to get around and understand. Would recommend. See more..

This monument is located along Irtysh river and was built to remember all soldiers of Oskemen who died during war in Afghanistan. The monument is black and white and thanks to this has a strong visual impact, it is not possible don't notice when walking. This is my fourth year working and living in Oskemen. I started skiing here and basically taught myself with a little help from my friends. I really enjoy Altaiskiye Alpy. The service has always been excellent. Although I do not speak the language, the staff is always friendly and helpful. This is my weekend "go to" place in Winter. My more experienced skiing friends enjoy the slopes as well and we all concur that it is a really fun affordable day out. See more..

I visitied this monument during my travel in Oskemen. The area is well know as "Strelka", a place where Irtysh and Ul'ba rivers meet each other. It is a very nice walk going to Strelka and the monument to the heroes of Soviet Unione is large and majestic. I advice to visit this place at sunset, where sunlight is warmer and also because monument is nicely illuminated with artificial lights. Please see my pictures. See more..

The Boris Alexandrov Sports Palace was just down the street from our hotel when we were in Oskemen about a week ago. We ducked in one day to check out the Soviet-style rinks and were able to catch part of a game between some younger kids who were fast and skilled players. The building was quite nice, the bleachers all had great views of the ice and the small crowd was lively. If there had been a big game on while we were in town this would have been an interesting venue to check it all out. See more..

The museum is located in the center of the city. Strange thing is museum has big building but small number of showpieces. I also wonder how they maintain the madrasa of Abai which is right besides the museum. They never offer to enter. Going back to museum, it could be best place which could tell story of city and great philosopher Abai, but I believe the management of building doesn't maintain it well. Probably city's mayor should pay more attention on this historical place. See more..
