   There are two museums, one on each side of the street. One is art (paintings, mostly) with many rooms of surprisingly good art. Some traditional Kazakh yurt scenes, some more contemporary - but very good, many woodcuts and other non-paint formats. Here an English-speaking guide provided context and enriched the visit. This is worth the Tenge. Directly across the street is the natural history regional museum. Again, this is a very large place with numerous galleries to showcase their extensive collection. Yes, staff turn lights on as you progress through the rooms, but I find this typical of regional museums in Kazakhstan. The Atyrau Golden Man is here. One of the few that have been discovered. His golden armour shines and he appears to be a fierce batyr (warrior). Both of these are great regional musems and worth the Tenge that supports them. See more..

   The statue of the Fisherman fisin' for Caspian Sturgeon was my favorite part of Retro Park. Reminds me so much of the PRIMUS song, "The Ol' Diamondback Sturgeon", which is a song about...fishing for sturgeon (but in San Pablo Bay, California not the Caspian Sea!) When we lived in Atyrau, my wife Ardak (who is from Atyrau) and I would take our baby Jamey there and walk around in a stroller. It's a very nice park and definitely the nicest one on Atyrau! They even have statues of a Rock Band. I always imagine they are playing the PRIMUS tune "The Ol' Diamondback Sturgeon" :) See more..

   Whoever started Chaplin theatres obviously was inspired by theaters in America. For example, they have a concession stand, and it's the only place in the city that has nachos with real tortilla chips and a container of processed yellow cheese-just like back in 'Merica! You can get popcorn that is sweet (I've seen this variety all over the former Soviet Union in Belarus and Ukraine, however) which is different from the buttery kind in America. It reminds me of an American movie theater from the 1980's before stadium seating overtook America. What I find bizarre though is they have little booth style seats outside and most people eat all their snacks BEFORE the movie starts instead of while the movie is playing inside the theater. Interesting. Most movies are in Russian of course, but they show movies in Kazakh and on Thursdays and Sundays they SOMETIMES have an English movie! I saw Star Wars the Force Awakens as well as The LEGO Movie in 3D! See more..
