   The Serafim-Iversk Cathedral in Ekibastuz is a nice place for a stop along the road. We needed a moment of reflection and peace and the cathedral was an appropriate place to do so.    One of my favourite places on the planet (along with Cheo Lan water reservoir in Khao Sok NP, Thailand and Sapa, Vietnam). Bayanaul is perfect for trekking and amateur climbing, there are plenty of not too demanding paths and you can just climb up the mountain almost anywhere you like. I just can't praise enough the work water did eroding stones over thousands of years - there is an abundance of weirdly shaped boulders, nice clefts with tiny pine trees growing in there, ideal circle shaped pools on tops of mountains, etc. See more..

   The Cathedral of the Annunciation in Pavlodar is a nice cathedral that you can walk around inside or attend a mass at too. Not the most amazing cathedral I have ever seen, probably not a big tourist attraction, but a nice place of worship with a peaceful feeling. See more..

    The exhibits were very well done and informative and well worth the visit. The exhibits were in Kazakh, Russian, and English. What lacking was the history of Pavlodar itself and information about the area. The prehistoric and bronze era sections were fascinating. Following that there is a jump to Kazakh culture, jewelry, and life. There was a room that combined WWII and modern life in Pavlodar (industry, etc.). The 2nd floor was devoted to the merchant who owned the building and used it for his wares. Overall, it is well worth visiting! See more..

    Our Dvin Hotel arranged a taxi ($1) for the 3 km to this museum created in 1964. We climbed the steps for the 10 AM opening, then paid our 200 Kzt each, before a docent was assigned to lead us around the 3 rooms. The large one on the right featured numerous good paintings of local factories and their workers in a bit of the 'soviet' style.The room to the right had works of regional artists from the past few decades of general views, and along the floor, local 'textile craft' exhibits in frames. We were kept in sight at all times but we were pleased to be exposed to this side of Pavlodar. See more..

    In the spirit of the area, with all the coal mining and refineries, this Bucket Monument in Ekibastuz is not out of place. It’s literally a giant scoop bucket on a plinth. It’s great that it is there, true to the area that’s for sure, not going to be a big tourist draw by any means but if you see it you will know it haha you can’t miss it on your drive into the town.     Driving through Ekibastuz on our way to Karaganda we stopped to stretch our legs and get some fresh air. The Glory Obelisk in Independence Square is a nice monument to take a moment to see. Ekibastuz is known for its coal and there are some huge coal-fired power plants in the area including the worlds largest chimney that you can see from miles away. See more..
