Palmanova Città Fortezza - World Heritage Site image
This city/fortress is just incredible, if you are there go see it even just for a half an hour because it is of great historical importance and in reality it is not very big as one would expect it. I did not have much time and I am still happy that I visited it so now I just have a reason to come back with some more time and to explore more thorougly. Plus, it is UNESCO world heritage site, if that does not convince you, I don't know what it does. See more..

Il Tempietto Longobardo - World Heritage Site image
The Tempietto Longobardo for me was the higlight of my trip to Cividale. The whole history of the tempietto, and the various layers of enhancements made over the centuries, as well as the different uses it had, is really interesting, and I recommend that you sit through the video reconstructions available on the first floor. Unfortunately it was being restored when we visited so it was kind of hard to see from the entrance and the convent windows, but still amazing. See more..
  5. 4.5 Villa Manin (389 reviews)
    - Hidden Gem

    Villa Manin image
This is a real hidden gem. A place that deserves a visit. It is the last villa that the last Venetian Doge built. Environmental sorroundings are green and simple, making you feel the beauty of simplicity. Culture and Nature meet there in Villa Manin. See more..
  6. 4.5 Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Aquileia (338 reviews)
    - Definitely worth an hour od two of your time
Tuesday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Aquileia image
The starting point for the history of the Museum is due to the activity of two very different persons: canon Giandomenico Bertoli (1676-1763) and Lepoldo Zuccolo (1761-1833), a painter from Udine. Bertoli collected finds that are still the core of the exhibition; his aim of popularization - according to his time's spirit - is reflected in his work "Le antichita di Aquileia", puglished in Venice in 1739. The seat of his exhibition was his own house, in via Patriarch Popo, and included a remarkable epigraphic collection; after his death and a series of vicissitudes it was bought by Count Antonio Cassis Faraone, who placed it in his "Palazzo" in Monastero, North-East of the centre of Aquileia. Lepoldo Zuccolo is the promoter of the first Public museum of Aquileia, in the ancient Baptistery and Church of the Pagan (both contiguous to the Basilica): it was founded in 1807 and called "Eugeniano" in honour of Eugene de Beauharnais, chief of the Central Government in Milan. 7. 4.5 Loggia del Lionello (325 reviews)
    - Interesting building in the heart of medieval Udine
    Architectural Buildings
    Loggia del Lionello image
Loggia del Lionello was built in the 15th century under direction of the goldsmith Nicolò Lionello. The function of the building was to be the Town Hall. Up to today the Loggia del Lionello still has this function, together with several other historical buildings in the same block. In the 19th century a fire did severe damage to the Loggia, but it was rebuilt meticulously. It is worth to take an extensive look at this beautiful building on the Piazza della Libertà. See more..

A very good place for dogs and for the owners, too. We spend a whole day here and everything was perfect. When we bought our tickets a man showed us our place and gave fresh water for our dog. 10. 4.5 Lago del Predil (264 reviews)
    - Quiet, beautiful mountain lake
Spent 2-3 hours Bodies of Water • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Lago del Predil image
We live in Trenta and usually go and visit Lake Bled or Bohinj which takes between 2-2:30 hours and is a pain to drive to as the mountain pass is so bendy. Irritatingly as the crow flies the lakes are only around 20 miles away but a great big mountain's in the way. So when a friend recommended Lago del Predil over the border in Italy we have it a try. Getting there from Bovec was easy via the Predil pass. A good tip was as you go past the lake was to ignore the car park and continue to the other end of the lake; past a memorial on your right and soon on the left were some spaces and a dirt track leading to the lake. The best place to sit was towards the middle as the water is warmer there. Majestic lake, really quiet, quite cold but welcome on a hot day. We really enjoyed it. If you have young kids bring a sun shade as it is really open. See more..

  12. 4.5 Santuario Beata Vergine di Castelmonte (202 reviews)
    - Worth the trek
    Religious Sites
Santuario Beata Vergine di Castelmonte image
I call it a trek to Castelmonte, because, maybe caused by the confusing address on their web site, or an error from me, the satnav sent us completely in the wrong direction from our holiday home in Cividale. After we corrected the problem we reached Castelmonte, but via which roads and villages I will never know. The journey home was rather straightforward ...... But enough of this. I can tell you that the Santuario Castelmonte is an very impressive small village of two streets on top of the hill, crowned with a terrific church. Views from the square in front of the church over the surrounding landscape are breathtaking. How to get to the church. The straightforward way is to leave the car at the large parking lot at the base of the hill and walk. If walking uphill is a problem for people in the party, halfway the road uphill is a limited parking area with an elevator, delivering you in the church. See more..
  13. 4.5 Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata (194 reviews)
    - Again a stunning church in an Italian town
    Tuesday: 7:00 AM - 11:55 AM, 4:00 PM - 6:55 PM Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites • History Museums • Churches & Cathedrals
Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata image
When visiting an Italian town, it is in the cards, that there will be at least one or maybe more breathtaking churches ready to visit. Udine is no exception. The main church of Udine, the Cathedral (Duomo), is overwhelming in its expanse and beauty. Instead of describing the experience extensively, I have added some pictures. These say more than a thousand words. I like to draw the attention to the overhead painting. After admiring the Duomo a visit to the Battistero and the Duomo museum must not be forgotten. I will review this visit separately. As in most Italian churches, except in Florence of course, entrance to the Duomo is free. As in all churches, a small voluntary donation in the box will be appreciated. See more..

Riserva Naturale Regionale Lago di Cornino image
Natural reserve for birds of prey and vultures is an astonishing and one of the best place in Europe to see griffon vulture and other birds of prey on one site. In the near of centre is a feding station for them worth visiting. The stuff is very good and offers a wide range of knowledge to visitors and a close look with telescope. Try to find their help. Some injured owls are in cages that are big enough. Try to spend enough time also on walking trail even the interpretaton tables are just in Italian. Lake Cornino is a pearl. Best time to visit trail is on working days to have enough peace and space to observe nature and birds. See more..
  17. 4.5 Casa Cavazzini (160 reviews)
    - Udine's museum for modern art
Tuesday: 10:30 AM - 7:00 PM Art Museums
    Casa Cavazzini image
This museum, located in Udine's center, features it's temporary exhibits on the ground floor, and the permanent exhibits on the upper floors. The emphasis is on artworks (mainly paintings) from the region - in general, very worthwhile. A critical comment is that one easily may loose his/her way in this historical building. See more..
  18. 4.5 Orrido dello Slizza (154 reviews)
    - Most Beautiful walk with kids
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
    Orrido dello Slizza image
ok, this has to be one of the nicest hikes i've done lately. great to do with kids. Bring a towel so that they can play at the water's edge in warm weather. Tip: really take the route from the parking spot down at the sign instead of the other way around. the way back is much easier to do and you have the steepest part down than at the start See more..
  19. 4.0 Area Archeologica di Aquileia - Foro Romano (337 reviews)
    - A diamond in the rough
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Area Archeologica di Aquileia - Foro Romano image
When you travel to Aquileia you have to have a good imagination and some roman history under your belt. As a local teacher who teaches ancient history I've taken my classes there for several years. I love this little town as an example of a roman city, but you need a map in hand and the ability to block out what is new. There are fantastic mosaics everywhere and some great examples of fortifications dating back to the dark ages and middle ages. Don't miss the museum and the basilica those are the two biggest draws, but if you are really into roman history you can easily spend a day or day and a half in Aquileia. See more..
  20. 4.0 Piazza Grande di Palmanova - World Heritage Site (331 reviews)
    - Wow!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Piazza Grande di Palmanova - World Heritage Site image
Wow! It was what I said when I came here. It is huge, unusually round (for historical reasons), main square, but incredibly beautiful. Unfortunately I could only be there for a short time but I could not miss this, now I only have a reason to come back and explore some more. Even if you don't know anything about it, there are various plaques around with texts about the square and city of Palmanova itself. See more..
