  4. 4.5 Santuario Di Barbana Church (334 reviews)
    - Nice boat trip on the laguna to a quiet island
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Santuario Di Barbana Church image
We visited Barbana island on an August afternoon because we saw the beautiful church towers from a distance. We had a bit difficulty to find the regular boat to the island. The signs are not so clear next to the road, so pls be aware. The boat starts from next to a white bridge (bridge leads to a small island, part of Grado). The boat trip took appr 20mims, nice environment of the laguna: we saw lots of birds and the sea was quiet. The Barbana island itself is small and very quiet. The church is nice. There is one interesting feature in it and these are the hand-made testimonials of people who were saved with the help of Mary. These paintings, description and the silver thank-you hearts are really nice and very unusual. It was a good afternoon outing for us, no regrets.... See more..

    - Exploring Gorizia's WWI as you'd have really part of it
Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Military Museums • History Museums
    Great War Museum image
The purpose of this museum of First World is to represent the war events and their human and social influences. After an introduction on the First World War, attention is focused on the events on the War front along the Isonzo: besides the weapons and arms there are also objects related to the daily life of the soldiers and a real life reconstruction of a trench. Then there is the documentation of the situation in Gorizia, a real "trenchtown" and the description of the 1917 and 1918 events, until the armistice between Italy and Austria on the 3rd of November. The First World War museum includes an area dedicated to General Armando Diaz, with an exhibition of documents, medals and other objects. See more..

  8. 4.5 Colle Sant'Elia (114 reviews)
    - Somber But Suitable For All Ages
    Cemeteries
    Colle Sant'Elia image
Located nearer to the parking lot than the massive memorial across the street, this park is filled with military hardware. However, rather than glorifying slaughter, it is filled with poignant recollections of individual pieces of equipment and fighting groups. For examples, there are spots devoted to nurses, sailors, the telephone, barbed wire, bicycles, and boats. One particular spot is very moving (near the bottom on the right hand side of the stairs going up the hill), from the Unknown Soldier (Soldato Sconosciuto) with the saying . “Ogni mattina mamma ed ogni sera io sento l'eco della tua preghiera.” (Every morning, mom, and every evening I hear the echo of your prayer) – I still get weepy just thinking about the loneliness, fear, and despair these young people endured. Free parking and no admission charge. Children and pensioners alike will find something of interest. There are plenty of stairs so take your time. See more..
  9. 4.5 Palazzo Coronini Cronberg (97 reviews)
    - Very beautiful and interesting
Tuesday: Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Art Museums
    Palazzo Coronini Cronberg image
Palazzo Coronini Cronberg, which now houses the homonymous Foundation established by its last owner, Count Guglielmo Coronini Cronberg (1905-1990), is a historic building dating back to the end of the sixteenth century. Walking through the fifteen exhibition rooms, among which the room where in 1836 the last King of France Charles X of Bourbon stayed and died, visitors are taken back in time, thanks to the warm and charming atmosphere of the rooms with sixteenth-century and seventeenth-century furnishings on the ground floor, to the sumptuous eighteenth-century sitting rooms, to the imperial rooms and to the nineteenth-century environments on the main floor. Knick-knacks, silverware, china, crystalware, photographs, portraits and objects of everyday use re-create the atmosphere of a home where people really seem to live in, feeling the presence of the ancient owners in every room. The villa is surrounded by a wonderful five-hectare English-style park, in which you will see important archaeological finds from Aquileia, an elegant Art Nouveau small temple, rare and precious plants: ash trees, lindens, Himalayan cedars, exotic plants, such as palm trees, loquats, bamboos and a centuries-old cork-oak. Tuesday: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM, 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio image
In Piazza della Vittoria, built between 1654 and 1747 by the will of the Jesuits, there is a single nave structure. Inside there are 3 chapels on both sides with splendid baroque altars, marble decorations, carved and inlaid wooden furnishings from the 17th century, the altar by the Venetian sculptor Lazzarini (1716) and the 18th century fresco of the pulpit "La Gloria di S. Ignatius "painted by Tausch. The exterior facade by Christoph Tausch enhances its architectural features. In the niches, located above the three entrances, we can admire the statues of the saints: St. Ignatius in the center, John the Baptist on the right and St. Joseph on the left. The two bell towers with the classic bronze onion domes complete its beauty. This church is also accessible to people with physical disabilities. See more..
  15. 4.5 Sacrario Militare di Oslavia (51 reviews)
    - Because we must remember.
    Tuesday: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM Architectural Buildings • Monuments & Statues
    Sacrario Militare di Oslavia image
This is a monument commemorating the deaths of 57,000 Italian soldiers killed in the Gorizia area in WWI. We tend to think of Belgium and France as the prime battle sites, but clearly there was a lot of death and destruction in this area. There are 70+ steps to get up to the monument and a panoramic view of the surrounding hills once you’re at the top. We go to these monuments of war to remain mindful of the need not to have to build any more of them. See more..

    Lis Neris image
The first Italian town to greet the river Isonzo as it meanders its way out of Slovenia is Gorizia, historically Europe’s most contended border settlement. Flowing south, the river crosses enchanting countryside dotted with villages nestling around their bell towers and vineyards where the spirit of the place beats time with the rhythms of daily life. It is here that, since 1879, four generations of my family have worked passionately to help create and develop one of Friuli’s most representative wine estates. 1981 was the turning point in the history of the winery. That was the year we introduced a new approach to production aimed at up-grading quality. White wines proved to be the best expression of our “terroir” and they became the focus of our mission. Our aim today is to produce wines of increasingly high quality and our role is to create the conditions to let this happen. We hope that in tasting and offering these wines you will feel the same delight that we feel in producing them See more..

    Agriturismo Dolince image
Pur diretti in Istria a Pirano abbiamo deviato sul Carso e in tarda mattinata, dopo avere ammirato i colori dell'autunno, abbiamo notato l'agriturismo Dolince. See more..

La laguna di Grado e i suoi Casoni image
The first sight visitors get of Grado is its shiny lagoon. The town with its palaces, houses, pavements and harbour seems to be part of the waters lightness. The massive stones of churches reflect the inner strength of Grado citizens, mountains are not very far, but there is a gentleness an easy way to meet foreigners, which, again, seems inspired by the rhythm of waves lapping its beaches.
