ARCAS is a Guatemalan NGO dedicated to wildlife rescue and conservation. The Parque Hawaii is the premier sea turtle and mangrove conservation and research project in the country. There, ARCAS also has community development and environmental education projects. Sea turtle nesting season is from July to December. During these months, visitors to the Parque can take 2-3 hour tours to learn about efforts to conserve the sea turtle and other wild animals, release hatchlings on the beach, and take boat trips through the nearby mangrove wetlands. Volunteers help conduct patrols searching for sea turtles and taking research data. ARCAS's wildlife rescue center near Flores is the largest and most complete wildlife rescue center in the Americas, receiving 40 species wild animals, the majority confiscated from wildlife traffickers operating in the Maya Biosphere Reserve. They did not have any turtles to release when we went (des 2022). Go to Fundaselva which is close by, and much better, and you can get super close. This place is also less well maintained. They have a "zoo" across the road, where they have open air pens with iguanas, crocodiles, and turtles. We only paid the entrance as the funds are going to charity, as the "zoo" was not all that great. Perhaps at other times this vcan be a better experience. See more..
