    Mate’s Wine Cellar image
Mate’s Marani is a family-owned winery and ethno-location in Imereti region. Perfectly located on the crossroads of Kutaisi and Tskaltubo, this place is very easily reachable from both cities (5mins drive from Kutaisi, 10mins drive from Tskaltubo). Our story begins from 2017, with the decision to leave the “city-life”, move to our old family house in Banoja and start the long journey of wine-making. Our main ambition was to produce natural wines with the traditional Georgian methods. Our production is mainly focused on wine, even though we also produce spirits and honey. From our small vineyard we obtain to produce only 4000-5000 bottles of wine per year. The small production allows us to attend to the quality of our products in every single detail. For now Mate’s Marani unites - old traditional cellar, open and closed terraces for dinner/lunch, beautiful garden and the most important - friendly hosts – who are always happy to welcome guests into their family. We visited the winery for a lunch and wine tasting. Gaioz is a wonderful storyteller, all the details about traditional winemaking were very interesting. Wine is delicious, biodynamic, produced in qvevri. Lunch was prepared by Gaioz’ mother who is 88(!) years old! Her wonderful dishes are made according to traditional Georgian receipts. In general, the welcome was more than heartful, we leaved the winery with a lot of gifts, and warm feelings, and a lot of wine, of course. See more..

We searched for an interesting and “real” place close to Kutaisi. And we found this. Great find! It is the home and now also museum of the late writer Otia Loseliani. Now run by his grandkid Otia Otosa Loseliani. Otia (the younger one) has a great passion of restoring old stocks and making fabulous wine, Otskhanuri Sapere. We had a great wine tasting with the lovely couple, Otia and his wife, our youngest child was sleeping and they fetched pillows and covers. Lovely feeling. We love to come back here another time and then bring some luggage to take home some of the wine, we just took home memories this time. The museum was interesting and a time capsule in itself. 15. 4.5 Motsameta Monastery (303 reviews)
    - Getting to Motsameta from Gelati
Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
    Motsameta Monastery image
The Bus for Gelati can drop you off at the turn off for Motsameta. If you choose one Gelati has the history and Motsameta has the perfect setting. If you are choosing to walk between both we recommend that you start at Gelati as there will be a lot less up hill. Getting to Gelati was easy. From behind the Main Theatre in Kutaisi there are marshutkas, just as around. The one that we got had a painted picture on the sign. It departed at 1100 in the morning and took 30 mins. From here you can easily walk to Motsameta Monastery. - Walk down to the main road from Gelati, Turn left. - Walk until you come to a shop on the left this is the second street you will come to. - Take a left down the dirt road and follow it until you reach the train tracks. - Go left along the train tracks until you reach the abandoned rail station - You will see Motsameta Monastery down to your left. You can follow the train tracks back into town if you want to. This is what we did. Enjoy. See more..

Friendly locals and very interesting place and surprisingly clean and well organised. See more..
  17. 4.5 Cableways Chiatura (80 reviews)
    - Definitely worth a visit
Sunday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Trams • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Cableways Chiatura image
These metal cabins look scary but it's a way of life for the locals. We had a great time mingling with curious locals who laughed at us when we told them we came all the way from India just to ride these cable cars :) There are two cable ways within the town, going in opposite directions and both have great views. There is another cable car about 5 kilometers outside of the town, which is basically a combination of two cable cars... the first one takes you across the river on a hillock, and after a further 100 minute walk, there's the second one that takes you across the gorge to a higher hilltop. There are no views from those cable cars as they are just used by miners and locals. Chiatura is a beautiful town lost in time. We stayed for a night and I'd have loved to stay longer. See more..

We went here at 11 and thought we could go up to the amusement park. But apparently it opens at 12, it did look closed for the season but was fully operational. So at least we could go down. Cost just 1 lari. Safety? What is safety! At the amusement park side you could just walk straight out over the edge, hold your children safe! No lock or whatever on the door, just step in. We waited a good 20 minutes and got to play in the gondola, not recommended. But great fun. Superb views of the city. See more..

  25. 4.5 House Museum of Mayakovskiy (7 reviews)
    - Just 20 minutes from Kutaisi, in Bagdati, a museum dedicated to home life of futurist Russian poet

    House Museum of Mayakovskiy image
"I was born in the Caucasus, my father is a Cossack, my mother is Ukrainian. My mother tongue is Georgian. Thus three cultures are united in me," the Bagdati born Russian futurist poet said in a 1927 interview. For Mayakovsky, Georgia was his eternal symbol of beauty. "I know, it's nonsense, Eden and Paradise, but since people sang about them -- It must have been Georgia, the joyful land, that those poets were having in mind", he wrote later. This museum is well tended and curated. Give it a visit. Mayakovsky's relationship with the Soviet state was always complex & at times tumultuous. Mayakovsky engaged in confrontation with the increasing involvement of the Soviet State in cultural censorship and the development of the doctrine of Socialist Realism. Many of his works contained criticism or satire of aspects of the Soviet system, such as the poem "Talking With the Taxman About Poetry" (1926), the play The Bedbug (1929) & The Bathhouse (1929), which were scorned by the Soviet state and literary establishment. While you are in Bagdati, check out the wonderful little natural and authentic western region of Georgia wineries in adjacent Obcha district! See more..

Sure it is the city centre so if staying in Kutaisi you will pass it by many times. The roundabout is a bit scary to walk with kids and in late evening it does not feel particularly safe. The banks with ATMs are here and restaurants and shops. So are people of every age drinking hard liquor in the evening, exotic to look at. Stay safe! See more..
