Rioni River, Imereti Region, Georgia

4.5 (5 reviews) Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #24 in Kutaisi Bodies of Water

Very interesing river

It is as interesting as it is long. White stones and some very pretty building alongside. A white a bit scare bridge to walk over and so many more to cross. Some very simple and worn down building as well there.

    Wild water from Caucasus mountains
With over 320 km the wild Rioni river is Georgia's longest. It drains the whole western Transcaucasus into the Black Sea. Kutaisi is the most important town on its banks. At Poti on the coast it flows into the sea. Though it can significantly increase in size during periods of rain, it is not navigable. The river used to be flowing through an area with many swamps, but most have been drained and are now suitable for agriculture. A trail following the river from its origin in the Racha area of the Caucasus mountains to the sea does not (yet) exist. A nice loop along the Rioni near Kutaisi is to walk to the Botanical gardens on its westside, continue until there is a small dam (Gumat Hes), cross and return to the city by the east bank (5 km in total).
