   The trail starts basically from our backyard, so we hike or run through it pretty often. There are two alternatives in lenght 4 or 6kms, which are marked, but if you want, there are plenty of unmarked trails to take also. The area is confined by the sea and the Santalahti golf course, so no worry about getting too lost. Just pick a direction and follow it if you lose your bearings. Here you get to see the true nature of local coastal enviroment with splendid views to the sea. Info signs are posted to point out different features that are typical to the area. Surface of the trail varies from the rock to soft/wet ground in which spots there are wooden footbridges set up. This is an easily accessible spot for individuals or families interested in nature and capable of hiking few kilometres. Just wear clothig appropriate to the weather and enjoy for a few hours.    Pyhän Ristin Kirkko (Holy Cross Church) was built in 1913-1915. First it was a Russian military church, then a Lutheran church and nowadays an orthodox church. The building is extremely beautiful. It is situated within the precincts of an old barracks, only one kilometer from the downtown (Manski pedestrian street). However, I recommend that you walk still further from the church to see all beautiful houses in the old barracks area (around parks Prikaatinpuisto and Rykmentinpuisto). See more..

    Heisanharju Nature and Recreation Area is situated in the former municipality of Jaala. Nowadays it belongs to the city city of Kouvola. Heisanharju is located in Northern Kouvola, 40 kilometers from the city center. Last kilometers are quite narrow dirt road but it is easy to drive there by a passenger car without a caravan. They plow the road from snow in winter, but there may be delays in snow removal. I think that Heisanharju Nature Trail is the best nature path in Kouvola outside Repovesi National Park. The circle trail is only three kilometers long but sceneries are very beautiful. You see small ponds, lakes, eskers and forests. The trail is marked but there aren't any signs with place names there. You don't need a separate map but it is a good idea to take a photo from the map on the information board in the beginning. There is one rest stop on the trail. You find a free campfire hut (firewood available), dry toilets, an outdoor table, a swimming pier and a reservable hut there. This is a great place with children, too. See more..

    Why did I forget to write a review? I climbed the mountain with a local resident last year on the first nice day in June. It had been cold and blustery up till then, but the last day before I was going back to Helsinki dawned sunny and we decided to risk the walk. I wished within 10 minutes that I hadn't put my jacket on. It turned out to be a warm day for a lovely walk to the part where you cut in and walk through to start the "climb". No equipment is needed, even though a couple of parts are virtually sheer. We spent a couple of hours there, as the place holds memories of someone dear to both of us and who has passed on, just drinking in the view and thinking. Even without the associations, this is so worth a climb. I'm unfit, but I can manage it. Try and go with someone who knows the area as they can point out places of interest. There's even a spring there that an enterprising cafe owner in Kotka used to fill up from to give her customers pure spring water. Of course, health and safety prevents that now. However, even without a "guide" it's well worth the effort. That view is to die for. See more..

    I stopped by at Kissanviiksi on my way to Hamina using the so called old highway (170). Really a unique place operated by the owner. It is good to check the opening hours from the web. I purchased some hand made souvenirs at a price you would have to pay for cookie-cutter industrial versions in Helsinki. Felting is also available for those who are into it. A unique place to visit.
