See more..
  2. 5.0 Bodhisattva Temple (8 reviews)
    - Spectacular views
    Spent 1-2 hours Religious Sites
    Bodhisattva Temple image
This is a beautiful, colorful, peaceful temple at the top of a cluster of temples. There are spectacular views of the mountains, some of which were snow-capped when we were there, as well as many temples all around. There are 108 steps, same number as in Buddhist rosary, leading down from this temple. Due to my vertigo, it was a challenge for me to make it down but a helpful Chinese couple walked in front of me from top to bottom. For photographers it's a great place to take stunning photos. There were crowds there but I didn't feel it detracted from the experience. See more..
  3. 5.0 Fomu Cave (4 reviews)
    - Tough climb up
    Caverns & Caves
The walk up is about 1600 steps according to our guide. Tough climb although there's option to ride on a pony for Rmb100 per pax one way. Gondola lift system is due to be completed next year as we were told. Primary attraction is a tiny hole 0f about 0.7m by 0.4m which opens up into a 1.5m by 2.2m by 1.5m (guesstimate) cavern. Legend has it that the female Buddha Tara resides in the cave. Going in and coming out of the cavern through the small opening is said to purify all negativities. See more..

Dailuo Ding of Wutai Mountain image
There's a local saying that one cannot say to have been to Wutaishan for pilgrimage if one does not visit Dailuo Ding. Situated on top of one of the peaks - it has a good view of the Tayuan Monastery and the valley below. There's gondola lifts up to the peak. Pilgrims make a 45mins walk up. Some even prostrate every 3 steps up. Main shrine is dedicated to the Five Manjushris of the five Wutai peaks. See more..
  11. 4.5 Xian Tong Temple (11 reviews)
    - Appropriated Temple
Spent More than 3 hours Religious Sites
    Xian Tong Temple image
The white Stupa in front of the temple was originally part of Xian Tong Temple. But during the Ming Dynasty it was appropriated by the emperor to give credit to his mother so that she would have a better after-life. So the new temple beside is called Tayuan Temple. The Bell Tower was also cut out from the main compound of the temple and you have to enter Xian Tong Temple sideways. Anyway the emperor always get what he wants. The amazing feature of the temple would be the Guilded Bronze Hall. Striking in the sun. See more..

    Nanchan Temple image
There is something magical about entering a temple that is 1200 years old. The ancient wooden structure with some peeling paint added to the mystique of the place. Though it is small in size, it is rich in history. Would love to go back! See more..
  13. 4.5 Wanfoge Temple (5 reviews)
    - Wuye Temple or "Five Uncle" Temple
    Religious Sites
    Wanfoge Temple image
The rough story goes something like this. This region faces drought frequently and the people suffered. So one day, Manjusri went to borrow a "cool stone" from the Dragon King to cool this region and bring rain. The Dragon King was unhappy and lost his cool. Then his Five Dragon Princes came here to retrieve the cool stone but were placated by the Manjusri Bodhisattva. So this temple is a place now where many people come to pray for rain and for their wishes to come true. Because of his ability to grant wishes, this temple is the most popular temple in Wutai. May 13 (Lunar) is the birthday of Wuye and is said to be the date where your dreams declared to Wuye are most likely to come true. While the entrance to the temple is free, if you wish to pray, you have to pay a high price for the incense. (RMB 100, 200, 300 etc) candles, etc. There are also many privateer that will accost you when you try to pray. They will assist you to light your incense and teach you to pray in the four directions. They will then ask for a very high service fee like RMB 300-1000. I tried to pay him RMB50 but we settled for RMB100. In other parts of Asia, such a temple (with such services) would typically be considered a Taoist Temple but here it is combined with Buddhist Gods and the chinese here has consummate skills in commercialising both Gods and Buddhas. If your wish were to come true, then you are required to return to the Temple within 3 years to offer your thanks. At this temple, and other temples, you can find offerings and donations from people (typically HongKies) whose wishes have been granted by the Five Dragon Prince (Wuye). May you have a fruitful trip here and experience the power of Wuye. See more..

  16. 4.0 Baohua Temple (2 reviews)
    - Непарадный храм
    Religious Sites
    Baohua Temple image

    Zhenhai Temple image
Nice smaller temple. Many temples were looted and pillaged during the cultural revolution. Many were rebuilt. A few smaller ones in out of the way places were spared. This one is smaller and older than many and was , at the time of building, a new architecture for temples inspired by Japan. See more..
