5 Stars because it is part of Jinci. This is the flying bridge, the first such bridge in China. This bridge has been reconstructed so it is actually new and not 1500 years old. it is beautiful and unique, with a fish pond below it. it is at the entrance of the Sacred Mother Temple. A must see. Jinsi Temple image
I absolutely loved visiting Jinsi. It was a beautiful day when I went, and the climate was excellent. There is a lot to see there, and it is surrounded by beautiful scenery and a clear flowing creek. There weren't any English speaking tour guides there, but there was ample English to read, so I don't feel like I missed out too much. I would definetly recommend visiting here if you are in Shanxi. Bonus: it wasn't very crowded! See more..

    Shanxi Museum image
The Shanxi Museum is a wonderful provincial museum managed by the government of Shanxi Province, home of some of the oldest history in China. The museum is located in Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi, in a modern four-storey building. It was wonderful collections of old history, Chinese money, architecture, Buddhist sculptures and much more. I'd be happy to write a full description if this listing is approved. I am not an official representative of this property but have clicked the box as you should seriously consider listing it. See more..
  6. 4.5 Mengshan Mountain Buddha (60 reviews)
    - Nice spot to visit

    Mengshan Mountain Buddha image
I used DiDi to visit there. From the southern part of Taiyuan(near Wucheng Residential District), it took 40min and ¥40 to the closest parking lot. From the parking lot, we walked a few minutes to the ticket office. There are some stores on the way to the office, so I recommend to get a bottle of water and some snacks if you like. A ticket was ¥50 to enter the sight, including round trip bus ticket. Through the entrance gate, bus station is very close. We ride the bus for a couple of minutes. After that, all the visitor must walk to the top of the mountain. The staff told me it would take 40-60min, but I thought it took us only 20-30min to the Buddha. The road was clean and easy to walk, there were so many benches, rest rooms and bins on the sidewalk. I saw some cleaning staff were sweeping the street. I went here on spring, so the weather was just perfect. I enjoyed watching trees and creek so I didn’t feel it was a long walk. When you climb up the last stairs to the top, the Buddha is there. Mesmerizing. Lucky for us, very few people were there. And you can walk up a little more to the top, right under the Buddha. I prayed, took some awesome pictures, and meditated. The trip was something like this. The staff here did not speak English, but if you know there process you will not have trouble. See more..

The Jinci temple complex is a fascinating group of very ancient buildings, with beautiful statues, a unique bridge and a tall pagoda. The dragons on the pillars of the Holy Mother Hall are amazing, and there are some huge statues inside. Jinci is not on the normal tourist circuit, but it is well worth visiting; it can be easily reached from Taiyuan on your way to Pingyao. See more..

  11. 4.5 Shengmu Hall (9 reviews)
    - Must go visit the Sacred Mother
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Shengmu Hall image
As this place has great historical significance, it is a mandatory place to go if you are a tourist. Get a good guide to explain this place to you otherwise it would just be an old temple with faded paint and a slanted tree. This temple turned into one for the Sacred Mother of Tang Shuyu because the Song emperor did not one a great leader to arise from here to defeat his dynasty as happened before. So in the aftermath of an earthquake, he used the excuse to change the temple as well as the surrounding Fengshui. It was a successful undertaking as no more great leader came from this place. Two Dragon Mountain image
See more..

See more..

  19. 4.5 Nanlao Spring (3 reviews)
    - Part of Jinci
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Nanlao Spring image
Again this is part of Jinci. It is located on the left of the main Sacred Mother Temple. Due to ground disturbance, this spring has actually stopped flowing. The flowing water that is seen is due to a new mechanical pump being installed. The water flow out nicely from the "Dragon's mouth. The water from this spring is split in a ratio of 7:3. The story behind this is during a drought, the villages were all fighting for water for their fields. To solve this problem, the magistrate came out with a idea, he put 10 copper coins into a boiling oil and the village will each send a representative to take out as many coins as possible with bare hands. So the guy from the first village managed to retrieve 7 coins, but as he suffered serious burns, he died in the process. The little structure in the middle is to commemorate him. See more..

    Yuci Ancient City image
When we arrived in this city we didn't think we had enough time here as it is so beautiful. There is so much history here and so much to do. We visited two temples and the ancient city wall, that is a lovely night life here as well with lots of shops and lots of places to visit in the evening. Two days is not enough. We did have a bad experience when we visited the massage place. One day we had a foot and a pedicure which was amazing and very cheap so we decided to visit the massage place again the following day and have a back massage, although at the time the back massage was invigorating the next day all three of us had huge bruises all on our backs!!! Do not get the back massage!! See more..

  27. 4.0 Chongshan Monastery (11 reviews)
    - A Little Piece of History
    Religious Sites
    Chongshan Monastery image
I visited Chongshan Monastery after visiting Shuangta Si. (It is about a 15 minute drive between the two). It is very small and takes about 5 minutes to see everything, but it is pleasant to see the monks lounging under the trees and playing with dogs. The temple itself has a dark, ancient air and is still used by locals and students praying for exam results. This temple is only 1/40th of its original size. It is a pity to think more of this could have been here to make it a more noteworthy attraction. Even the old houses around the temple were being demolished during my visit creating dust and traffic entry problems. I didn't see any beggars, maybe they were off for lunch, but I had my fair share of them in Shanxi province elsewhere. Note the 2 Yuan entrance fee which will be asked for by one of the monks. 28. 4.0 Wuyi Square (10 reviews)

    Wuyi Square image
It is almost impossible to miss this square, if you're in Taiyuan City. It is the landmark that I always use for taxi drivers. If you are a foreigner, like me, people will stop to chat to you. There is great shopping nearby. It is a fascinating place. Taiyuan is a sensational city. Make sure that you go to the Taiyuan Library: the architecture is exceptional. This is where China invests wisely. See more..
  29. 4.0 Tianlong Mountain (10 reviews)
    - Fresh air and a nice hike
    Mountains
    Tianlong Mountain image
I went to Tianlong Mountain in December, which was perfect because there were hardly any people there. The air is much cleaner up in the mountains, and we got lucky because it was a really sunny, windless winter day. Side note: Bring some food and drinks. I didn't see anything to buy, when I was there. There are plenty of little spots to have a nice picnic! Seeing the old Chinese buildings and the Buddhist shrines was really cool. Also, the caves in the mountains, that seemed to have been carved out so long ago for statues and worship, were really impressive. My negatives: The whole place is heavily under camera surveillance, which I found strange. It also made me a little uncomfortable, but it didn't stop me from climbing up into one of the caves to meditate in complete silence for as long as I wanted. The reason I gave Tianlong Mountain four stars is because of the giant (and I mean massive) pile of garbage I found in landslide form just off the path, on the side of the mountain. This was both disgusting and disappointing. Overall, I really enjoyed this place. It's perfect for a full day of exercise. I think it's a top attraction in Taiyuan. See more..
  30. 4.0 Taiyuan Chunyang Hall (9 reviews)
    - The old Shanxi Museum
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
    Taiyuan Chunyang Hall image
Honestly, the architecture and the collection are marvellous. It really worths 30 yuan entry fee to hang about for more than 2 hours as there are bronze ware, ceramics, wall painting, status, you name it. However, with the new museum well designed without entry fee, this Taoist temple is like a relic hidden in a busy city. There is only simple illustration to a beautiful ware dating back to Tang dynasty and there is no official guide or souvaniour at all. It is really sad to see heritages left as this. See more..
