It is a principle I travel by. When you end up in a new place - find a park and spend time there. This is where you find the spirit of the town or city. How the citizens treat their parks will tell you who they are. I go to Shenyang regularly on business. I specifically stay at a hotel two blocks away from the park. Early morning I will meet the rising sun with a jog. The smile that was born on my face when I discovered this park pops back when I reach the pathways that lead through the park. I will also meet the smiles of the early-morning runners, walkers, cyclists, chatters, anglers, tennis, tai-chi, basket ball......and the brids and trees and flowers. Over the weekends I will spend a longer day here. I go for a long run one way and spend the rest of the morning strolling back as the park gets busier and the families arrive. And the smiles pop up everywhere. To me there is no other experience in Shanyeng that matches my visits to Wuli Park See more..

This great museum is not far from the 9.18 museum. But have a detailed address as many taxi drivers don't know it. The POW camp is free to enter and has walls, watch towers and three buildings to explore. The buildings include recreated POW bunks, wash rooms and Japanese offices. There is also a large display on Allied forces in China - the largest exhibit and admission of its kind I have seen in China. The overall message is friendship between the Allies and Chinese. This was quite an experience and not what I was expecting. As this was late October the garden was closing down as the season was finishing and they were planting the bulbs for next year. However, we decided to continue the visit as we wanted to see the famous 125 metre high Lily Tower. It is quite a large garden – actually a park - full of surprises. As the board near the entrance states “The park is a collection of gardens and architectural products of five continents and key cities in the world.” All of which are worth exploring. We spent most of the day there and still wanted to see more. We shall return when the flowers are in bloom, because it will an absolute joy. This was our favourite of the places that we visited in Shenyang. An extensive complex of beautiful historial buildings. We spent a couple of hours wandering around here, and could have stayed longer - it is so peaceful. We found the buildings here even more impressive than the Imperial Palace. The park it is in, Bei Ling park is well worth exploring too, you could easily spend a full day between the park and the mausoleum. The entry to the park itself was 5RMB or entry to the park and mausoleum was 50RMB when we visited. See more..

I thought I was an old hand at dealing with Middle Street, but on my recent return it is a whole new ball-game. New malls have sprung up all down it course and the range of goods available is increasingly staggering, ranging from good quality domestic clothing stores to international chains, with items ranging from modestly priced accessories up to expensive, high quality jewellery. Food is well provided for as well, with a solid mix of Euro/America style eateries to Asian and international restaurants. Shopping extends well into the evening, as is the case in most Chinese cities I've visited and there are often street-vendors which appear at the intersecting roads and just off the main drag. Sure, there are better specialised shopping areas if you are looking for some things in the city, but for general shopping and browsing, or to find somewhere to catch a movie, let your child play in a great kids play centre or even go ice-skating - it is hard to beat. The ice festival is amazing! But don't go on the holiday a couple weeks after Spring Festival. It was way too crowded. Any other day is really good. If you go at about 4 then you'll have time to play some of the winter sports before the crowd gets there and the lights turn on. There is bbq and a few other street food snacks available. On the ground floor there are expositions of paintings and mural inscriptions. While I found it interesting to see an artist of the 18th century depicting the usual stylized cherry blossom branches, here you could see a fly being eaten by a praying mantis on it. The real interesting stuff for me started from the second floor. They had on loan from Sichuan parts of the Mystery Men exhibition, where they showed artefacts from this culture no one knows where it came from thousands of years BC. Stunning. On the third floor its dedicated to Liaoning province, and for me the Tang dynasty statues and artefacts were quite amazing. and by the way. The entrance to all Provincial museums is free. See more..

The tombs, more commonly known as the East Tomb Park (Dong Ling Gong Yuanr), are a great outing from the city. Just a few kms outside of the third ring road, the park is wooded and lush. The tomb sits at the back of the park and is an earthen mound. Several 17th century Chinese structures were built on top of a hill just before the tomb, as sites where no doubt ceremonies to honor the emporer were held. The structures are similar to those in Beijing's Ming Tombs, but on a smaller scale. Quite interesting. The walkway to the tomb is lined with Chinese mythological creatures and other animal statues, much like the Ming tombs. The park is a great place to visit an ancient Chinese artifact of national renown and also have an outing in the woods. You can hike through the woods along various paths. Kids will enjoy the outdoors, where their imaginations will let them become warriors or emporers hunting the enemy in the woods. See more..

I had very low expectations when arriving. A water cave doesn't sound very exciting. However, when you get there, the scale of this place absolutely blew me away. I visited in winter, so there wasn't that many people there. The walking section was pretty nice, you get to go through and see some formations and caves that open into very large sections. They had some cheesy dinosaur and dragon statues in here, which wasn't the best. The absolute highlight is the boat tour. They take you through something like 3 km of caves, with stalactites and stalagmites. It just keeps going on forever. It is something I absolutely would not pass up no matter what. See more..

I think that maybe because of the protective stage display, when people visited the Xinle site, they missed the most precious and amazing archaeological discoveries of the Xinle site. That is so far the earliest Chinese phoenix image "sun bird". It has been around 7200 years ago. Even more amazing is that it is carved on the wooden hairpin. Because of carbonization, it can be preserved to this day, so that we can see the amazing works of Xinle people 7,200 years ago. You know it was the Neolithic Age. Many civilizations are still playing with stones, but Xinle people have already started the art of woodcarving. Welcome to Shenyang again!
