   I was a bit uncertain about visiting here, as I had already visited the Yungang grottoes from Datong and had read that the Longman ones were damaged during the Cultural Revolution and weren't as good as the Yungang ones. Well, I have to disagree with this. Yes, many are damaged but there are some that aren't. The significance of the damage actually brings home some of the impact of the Cultural Revolution that gave me a deeper appreciation of it. In addition to being of a different style than those near Datong, I thought that some of the detail in the Longman carvings were greater. If you only want to see more intact statues, then Yungang would be better. If you only have time for one lot, then depending on your preferences you need to choose - I would have found it hard to choose. It is a day trip from Xi'an on a train (about 2 hrs each way).
