   The 8 temples are easily reached by taxi from central Chengde - 10 -15mins at most. Entrance fees are a standard 80RmB but the tickets usually cover two or more temples as long as you visit them on the same day. The bigger temples have lots of Chinese tour parties so they can be crowded and noisy. The earlier in the day you visit the better. Allow a morning or afternoon for each temple. When we visited (Oct 2011) two of the smaller temples (Pu Ren & An Yuan temples) were closed for restoration. See more..

   Tip : buy the combined ticket for 280yuans (Mountain resort, Potala and Punning Temple) if you're going to visit the main sights. You can add HammerRock the price would be 320yuans if I remember. Really nice temple, dont miss the largest bouddha in a piece of wood (22m), very impressive. Few monks around, and people praying. See more..

   It was a lovely tour with a very learned tour guide. However the tourists were all over the place and a few "strays" came to join our group and listened to the tour guide. Those in my group who do not understand Mandarin took a back seat and walked quietly with the group. The museum is a must - see tourist spot, even without a tour-guide. See more..

    Lasha is famous for its Potala Temple. However, it is too far away and too up high. So, if you want to get a similar feeling, visit Chengde's Small Potala instead. Chengde is located about 230Km north-east of Beijing. It is a popular one or two day trip destination for expatriates living in Beijing. It still takes 3 1/2 hours to get there from Beijing by car, the express way is under construction. When it is complete, it may take just two hours, I believe. The city of Chengde is worth visiting because many impressive sites are located side by side. My favorites are (1) Small Potala Temple, (2) Imperial Summer Palace, (3) Puning Temple. It took me 5 hours to visit just the above three. Other than those, there are 6 more outside temples, 8 in total. That's why some people stay over there. Again it is not easy to get there, but it is a worth while. See more..

    If the ski lift is closed, as it was when I visited, don't let this put you off! A hike from Puling Si (Puling Temple) to Hammer Rock, and then back down the path near the chairlift to Anyuan Temple will take around two hours. I wasn't sure if I could be bothered to do this, but I am glad I did. The rock is very impressive, as are the paths and views. The drop from Hammer Rock is quite scary mind! To find the correct path down from the chairlift, you need to exit the scenic area spinning gate and walk towards the chairlift station. Just before a raised pagoda and before the chairlift, turn away from Chengde. The path heads down away from Chengde down concrete steps. After a while it reaches a road and does a u-turn back towards Chengde town. See more..

    This huge red building has some fantastic interior sites. Don't forget a ticket to this temple includes the Potala Palace Temple next door. The temple has a very ornate roof, and there are great views of the Summer Mountain Resort Walls and the temple valley from the roof.     Anyuan Miao is probably the least-visited of the Chengde temples that you can officially tour, but to me it provided the most peaceful experience and has beautifully landscaped grounds. It located near Pule (pronounced Pu-la) Temple, which imitates the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. Anyuan Temple has no such distinctive shape as found with other Chengde temples. It is the best for just sitting down on the many benches under a shady tree and taking it all in (nature, the classical architecture and the quietude.) Make it the last one to see on your temple tour. There are still many historic aspects to see within Anyuan, but the park-like setting is the best part. It has a very Zen-like atmosphere.     Take bus nr. 15 or 25 and ride to ShuangTaShan bus stop (maybe another name but ask the people where to go out). Then you can see the entrance (if you take bus 25, then it's a 5 minute walk, cross the street and the river). The entrance is 50 yuan. After that you can walk up 365 steps.     Very clean, lots of designer shops! Bit of a waste for us as we were actually souvenir hunting and anything from here was well out of our tourist budget! However, as we had just visited the local market across the bridge, it really brought home to us that there really are 2 distinct sides to China- people with cash to flash and people with very little!
