See more..

Tive a oportunidade de ser bolsista no Parque das Nascentes. No verão, tem os rios para se dar um bom banho e se refrescar. See more..

    - So much potential but still struggling as a park

    National Park of Araucarias image
We visited in September 2018. The park has amazing potential but it still lacks basic infrastructure. Main challenges: 1.Trails are hardly used, so vegetation grows fast and blocks the trails. Make sure you go with a guide or you might get lost. Also, trails have no indication of difficulty level. Some trails are not recommended for people with disabilities or small children. 2. In spite of the name, Araucarias National Park, you will see very few araucarias (Araucaria angustifolia, the Paraná pine, Brazilian pine or candelabra tree is a critically endangered species). A large section of the park is reforested with European pine trees. The real huge swathes of land with dense araucaria covering are off-limits to travellers, as land dispute lingers on. 3. No infrastructure. No toilets, drinking water, maps, leaflets, visitor center or main entrance. 4. No website 5. You need a guide to visit the park. Don't go on your own. Contact park management by email or on Facebook to obtain authorization. Entrance is free of charge. We were guided by Cleiton, a local resident. He's articulate, well-mannered, familiar with fauna and flora. Rates are around R$100 reals per full day. 6. Accommodation may be available in a local guesthouse in the city of Passos Maia. Ask the park management. Or you can stay in the city of Ponte Serrada. There are no hotels in Passos Maia. 7. The trails are lovely, you'll see small cascades and river rapids and also native trees (very few araucarias, though). All in all, this is a park with great potential but it still lacks basic infrastructure to welcome regular visitors. It's only recommended for the adventurous, autonomous, healthy traveller.
