    Wat Phumin image
It was worth the drive from Chiang Mai just to see the frescoes in this temple - which include the famous one showing two lovers - the man whispering sweet nothings to his girl. I attach a photo of one of the less famous wall paintings but giving a good idea of the local art style. The is a sculpture of the couple at the main entrance to to temple and a favourite photo spot for visitors. See more..

    Wat Phrathat Chae Haeng image
This was a our first temple in Nan and it did not disappoint. Like many of the other Nan temples it has spacious grounds for walking or relaxing - including food and souvenir shops. The temple itself is peaceful, with a huge statue of the Buddha in the main hall, In front of the stupa is the focus of peoples devotion - a fine rabbit with a small Buddha covered in the small squares of gold leaf stuck on by the faithful - so much in fact that the surrounding ground is full of these tiny sheets of real gold leaf. Don't miss the wonderful reclining Buddha either in this perfectly maintained temple See more..

    Wat Ming Muang image
This is the first destination of our trip to Nan city. There are 2 main attractions (temple hall and city pillar shrine) in the place. Both of them are Lanna style white structures embellished with many spectacular detailed stucco (similar to the famous Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai). Although the place is not very large, it is worth a visit because it is very beautiful. P.S. Don't forget to by "Khao Lam" (sticky rice soaked in coconut milk and baked in a bamboo cylinder) near the temple. Yummy ! See more..

Wat Phra That Chang Kham Worawihan image
The approximately 600 year old serene temple is located at the corner of the street in the central region of Nan city. The path to the temple hall is decorated with many colorful Lanna lanterns and umbrellas. There are 2 guardian Singha statues lie in front of the hall. After we had worshipped principle Buddha image inside the hall, we walked to the nice golden pagoda (contains Buddha relics) supported around by 24 carving elephants (resembles the temple in Sukhothai) behind the hall. We also saw many young novices cleaned the temple court. See more..

    - Excellent Temple

    Wat Nong Bua image
Very seldom that such a beautiful temple in a perfect surrounding and well loved by the local residences can be found. Wat Ban Nong Bua is such a temple. Located some distance from Nan toward the direction of Pua, this temple is hidden in the small town of Tha Wang Pha. The temple has a generous parking area in front of the temple. Before you enter the temple, you will hear local music being played by local musician to welcome you. The temple ground is well landscaped and maintain. The main temple wall has the similar paintings from the same era as Wat Ming Muang in Nan. Behind the temple, there is a small gift shop manned by locals that are anxious to meet visitors than simply to sell their merchandise. This is an excellent temple not to be missed. See more..

    Wat Phuket image
The Lanna style temple is on the hill. After worship "Luang Por Saen Pua" in a main hall, ones can walk to a viewpoint behind the hall to enjoy a panorama view of the rice field with mountainous background. Moreover, by walking downhill from the temple, there is a walking street where you can buy many foods/drinks/souvenirs or chill out at the cafe in the midst of the rice field. We also saw the process of making "Kalamae" (Thai sweet = caramelized sticky rice with coconut milk) and, of course, bought them (Very delicious ; don't forget to taste Tai Lue recipe Kalamae). Additionally, there were some live performances such as traditional music and traditional dance. Awesome ! See more..
  9. 4.0 Wat Hua Khuang Temple (34 reviews)
    - Center of the city (in my opinion).

    Wat Hua Khuang Temple image
During our city tour in Nan, we drove past this temple again and again (with maximum count among all main attractions in the city). Therefore, in my opinion, I think that the temple is the center of the city (what a powerful induction ; HaHaHa). The approximately 500 year old Lanna style serene temple has 3 main attractions (the main hall, the pagoda, the tripitaka hall). Inside the main hall lies the principle Buddha image which is not in the middle! (Instead, a little bit to the left). The legend has it that in the past, dwellers in Hua Khuang community and the nearby Phumin community often had quarrels. They believed that this was because the principle Buddha images of the 2 temples facing each other. Thus, to avoid any further confrontations, Hua Khuang community decided to move their principle Buddha image a little bit to the left. After that, the two communities reconciled. Since this is the center of the city, so don't forget to make a stop and visit. See more..

Deep in the alley lies an approximately 600 year old beautiful royal temple. The door to the main hall is carved into 2 guardian giants. The principle Buddha image inside the hall looks very elegant with an aura around his head. It is also claimed to be the biggest principle Buddha image in Nan district. Impressive! See more..
  12. 4.5 Wat Rong Ngae (9 reviews)
    - Tranquil Tai Lue temple in Pua.

    Wat Rong Ngae image
The approximately 250 year old temple was built by Tai Lue people evacuated from Xishuangbanna in southern China. Highlights included Tai Lue style old wooden hall decorated by many long rectangular Lanna flags (called "Tung") with principle Buddha image. Behind the Buddha images, there is an ancient mural. Also, don't forget to look for Lanna style antique wooden pulpits. Next, in a mini hall, there are Buddha images with (new) colorful paintings. Near the mini hall, there is a tiny zoo where ones can find peacocks. Moreover, by walking to the back of the temple, there is a monument of a Tai Lue king who built this temple on a green-tusk white elephant. See more..

The about 100 year old temple contains a Lanny style hall and a golden pagoda. Inside the main hall, there are Burmese style principle Buddha image along with Upagupta (Buddhist saint, specialist in performing supernatural powers). The ceiling of the hall is embellished with Burmese pattern. The legend has it that Lord Buddha used to dry his robe at this place and the robe then turned into a gold. Thus, the pagoda was built to collect such golden robe. See more..

Wat Si Mongkhon (Wat Kong) image
We really enjoyed the visit to this monastery. There's a lot to see apart from the fine Buddha statue in the ordination hall. In the spacious grounds you can play at see saw made from old wagon wheels, sit on wooden carved motor scooters, admire life size black elephants (and an ancient cannon) and visit the museum on two floors where, apart from finding ancient radio sets and Walkmans are a particularly fine Buddha statue, a goddess of mercy and a life like waxwork monk. Lots of photo opportunities and grownups and children will love the place . I recommend 1 - 2 hours. You can also buy reasonably priced refreshments. See more..

    Wat Prang image
This temple is the first place we visited in 2022. After we had worshipped the principle Buddha image and also seen many colorful murals in the main hall, we moved to the highlight of the place, "Dik Diem tree". Our guide told us that this amazing tree bend away from the sun (Normally, a tree should bend toward the sun). Moreover, when ones caress its trunk gently, its branches and leaves will shake slightly without any wind as if it is tickled. We did it for almost 5 minutes, but the tree didn't move, not in the slightest!(why..y??). Then, we got a new year blessing from a kind monk in the morning of the first day of the year. See more..

  21. 5.0 Phra That Chom Thong (1 review)
    - The golden pagoda on the hill.

    Phra That Chom Thong image
This was our last destination in the year 2021. After a dinner, our guide took us to the top of the hill to worship the Lanna style golden pagoda that contains Buddha relics. The place was super tranquil (since it was already dark). After we had walked 3 times in clockwise direction around the pagoda to pay respect, our guide asked us to perform a local ceremony. We launched two floating lanterns on the last night of the year to let go all bad lucks. Before we left the place, we also visited and paid respect to a shrine of a couple who is believed to have built the place. Actually, this place is a good viewpoint to see a panoramic view of the town (but we couldn't, since it was already dark). See more..
  22. 5.0 Hey Temple (1 review)
    - The name of the place.
Spent < 1 hour Religious Sites
    Hey Temple image
We felt kind of "funny"when we first heard the name of the temple from our guide, since it is very rude word in Thai (and this place is in Thailand). However, the name is actually derived from a local dialect for calling a certain type of bamboo that grow around this temple in the past. The almost 300 year old small temple is not popular among tourists. There were only 4 of us at the time when we visited ! (may be COVID pandemic?). Even so, the Lanna style tranquil temple impressed us with its gorgeous decoration. At the entrance to its hall lie statues of a pair of white Nagas and molded figures of 2 monks holding alms bowl. Each of its doors and windows is embellished with beauteous silver bas-relief of guardian angels. Inside the hall, there are colorful murals about history of the temple and Buddha's biography. Also, we strolled around the place to absorb a nice rural ambience and enjoy a view of greenish field with mountainous background. See more..
