Excellent Temple

Very seldom that such a beautiful temple in a perfect surrounding and well loved by the local residences can be found. Wat Ban Nong Bua is such a temple. Located some distance from Nan toward the direction of Pua, this temple is hidden in the small town of Tha Wang Pha. The temple has a generous parking area in front of the temple. Before you enter the temple, you will hear local music being played by local musician to welcome you. The temple ground is well landscaped and maintain. The main temple wall has the similar paintings from the same era as Wat Ming Muang in Nan. Behind the temple, there is a small gift shop manned by locals that are anxious to meet visitors than simply to sell their merchandise. This is an excellent temple not to be missed.

A charming small temple in the Nan countryside, built in the Thai Lue style
This was a bit of a 'find', not just another traditional Thai temple but a very light and airy, indeed a happy temple. If I lived nearby I would certainly visit frequently, or at least whenever I felt stressed, and needed a bit of a pick-me-up. It doesn't have the grandeur of many Thai temples, even many small Thai temples, but does have a very special atmosphere and should connect more with the simplicity and realities of village life. From the side it looks fairly standard but from the front and as soon as you get inside, one can see that this is a quite different temple, especially with its extensive use of wood and large number of murals, many over 100 years old. The main building is surrounded by well manicured gardens with lovely colourful flower beds so take a few moments to admire those. It is not easy to find as it is a few kilometres away from the main 1080 road, and about 40 kilometres north of Nan City, but is signposted and just follow the signs for the village of Ban Nong Bua. The village is not large so it is easy to spot the temple near one end of the village. At least in season, a small group of local musicians can be seen playing traditional Thai instruments under a tree just past the entrance arch. There are some wooden huts just beyond the temple, near the monk's quarters, where one can see some traditional Thai Lue style (the Thai Lue were originally from southern China) tribal weavers at work – for which this village is particularly famous. If you are particularly interested in textiles there are also other weavers to see elsewhere in the village. One can easily see all there is to see in under an hour but if possible spend a bit more time to just relax and soak in the atmosphere.

    Beautiful small temples
Highly recommend to come and see mural painting inside temples wall. Very detailed and very unique in the way the artist use to represent the story. From my tour guide experience this is one of the art you must see.
