This site actually has 2 temples. The popular one is "Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao" which was once resided the famous emerald Buddha for 32 years. Our guide told us about a colorful folktale about Miss Suchada and the emerald inside a watermelon which was later craved into Buddha statue. Highlights of this temple included the beautiful Burmese-European pavilion and the golden pagoda containing Buddha relic (hair). Ones may take a stroll around the place to see the other architectures and visit the museum that contains many antique collections. The other temple is the tranquil Lanna style "Wat Suchadaram". This brick tower, rising over ten meters high, was part of the original city fortifications of Lampang. Built in 1808, with one side open, it has a three-story scaffold inside that was used to lift cannon and shot up to the battlement on top. The tower was probably intended as defense against a possible Burmese invasion. But the Burmese had been driven from their last stronghold in Chiang Saen in 1804 and did not march into northern Thailand again. So the tower was never used, but never demolished, either, and has been kept as part of the city’s heritage. See more..

This tranquil temple is an imitation (in precise scale) of Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya (India) where Buddha enlightened. Inside the temple contains 3 Buddha statues in 3 different colors (the black one, the white one, and the golden one) and many artifacts. Recommend to walk around (outside) the pagoda to see its pattern and greenish rural view. See more..
