-Do it yourself!
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Churches & Cathedrals
Stopped to visit Escorial whilst driving between Toledo and Segovia. Originally booked conducted tour in English through "Tiquets.com" who charged us £52.30 for 2. Chose this as they said the guide would meet us at the entrance and we would skip any queue. The night before, we were furious to receive an email from Tiquets saying there were insufficient numbers to make up an English tour, so they had cancelled it, refunded our money, leaving us high and dry, or so we thought. This turned out to be good news in the end as we decided to do it ourselves. We arrived at the Escorial about 11:00 on a Tuesday morning. Parked on the free parking area on Calle Calleja Larga and walked 300 yards to entrance. There were no crowds. We walked straight in and bought 2 English conducted tour tickets for 20 euro (senior citizen rate), which started at 11:30. The tour lasted 2 hours and took us all around the main building. It was fantastic. The only potential problem with doing it this way would be if there was a queue but I suppose the earlier you get there, the better it is. See more..

- 4.5 Museo Cerralbo (2.185 reviews)
-Great little museum
Wednesday: 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • Art Museums
A small but very interesting museum. A surprising place. From the outside, a classicist building from the end of the 19th century. Built and used as the home of the Marquis de Cerralbo. Currently an art museum. Perfectly preserved palace with beautiful interiors, kept in perfect condition. Furniture, paintings, lamps, at the same time retain its charm to make it seem like life goes on in the palace. It is worth getting lost in his rooms and transferring to another time. I recommend it especially to people who love art and do not like large crowds. See more..
- 4.5 Plaza mayor de Chinchon (1.313 reviews)
-Iconic balconies
Historic Sites
Chinchon can be visited in around 2 hours or even less. The plaza Mayor is for sure the most iconic place of the city with the narrow balconies where some restaurants have tables. Even on a Monday afternoon during the pandemic it was good visited, definetly not empty. Good for pictures. See more..
- 4.5 Castillo de Manzanares el Real (559 reviews)
-A bit of a gem a little off the Beaten Track
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Castles
The castle is located in the small town of Manzanares el Real which is about a 45-minute bus journey outside Madrid. We came across the castle a few years ago by visiting an old family friend who lives in the town. The day we visited the castle it was very quiet on a Saturday arriving just after lunch and we spent around 4 hours in castle. I’m sure if visitors to Madrid were aware of the castle it would be a lot busier but maybe that is a good thing as we didn’t experience the crowds like we did while visiting some of the well-known tourist attractions and was a little cooler than Madrid with a nice breeze. The castle is on about 4 or 5 levels with several state rooms and balconies on each level overlooking the castle courtyard. Once at the top we had excellent views over the Reservoir of Manzanares el Real from the one side and views of the mountains and town on the other sides. See more..
- 4.5 Casita de Infante (95 reviews)
-Peace and Tranquility
Historic Sites • Gardens
This is a house built by a Spanish prince overlooking the monastery at El Escorial. The house is not much to write home about, but the gardens are one of my favourite places on earth, and you can tour the gardens for free. Thousands of visitors go to El Escorial every day, but few go to La Casita. It is worth the extra walk or drive to go. See more..

Truly impressed by the biblical villages and scenes we came across all over town before Christmas. Tremendous effort by the locals who organize this and they are to be applauded. Where else would you run into a loaded camel train complete with drivers, shepherds with their flocks, Roman legionnaires, families planting veggies or harvesting olives? A delight for children of every age! See more..
- 4.0 Romana de Complutum (43 reviews)
-IF YOU NEED SOME ROMAN HISTORY
Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Historic Walking Areas
If you like Roman history you may appreciate the spot more than a casual tourist. It is modest by most standards. Dating from the late Republic period, much work still needs to be done. Remains of various urban houses can readily be seen. The site had more than one bath site. There is some English to assist with what is being viewed. A couple of Spanish cartoon characters put things in perspective for children. Sadly the House of the Griffins was not open, the marquis attraction. The Casa Hippolytus is a 12M or so walk away, along the main road. There was no entry fee. See more..

Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
This is where Saint Ignatius of Loyala got his first job as a cook. He would get the water for the kitchen from the well you see in the picture. He was 20 at the time and studying to be a priest. The benefactor of the hospital gave up part of her house in order for the hospital to operate and lived in the rest of the house which still conserves some of the original arab calligraphy. At that time it had 12 hospital beds. It now has 24 for old folks. See more..

See more..

- 5.0 Patio De Los Reyes (7 reviews)
-Hermoso Patio
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
See more..
- 5.0 Palacio De Los Austrias (5 reviews)
-Excelente Palacio.
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
See more..

- 5.0 Gabinete De Porcelana (2 reviews)
-Precioso y una verdadera rareza
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings

Wednesday: Historic Sites • Lookouts • Castles
