Castillo de Manzanares el Real image
The castle is located in the small town of Manzanares el Real which is about a 45-minute bus journey outside Madrid. We came across the castle a few years ago by visiting an old family friend who lives in the town. The day we visited the castle it was very quiet on a Saturday arriving just after lunch and we spent around 4 hours in castle. I’m sure if visitors to Madrid were aware of the castle it would be a lot busier but maybe that is a good thing as we didn’t experience the crowds like we did while visiting some of the well-known tourist attractions and was a little cooler than Madrid with a nice breeze. The castle is on about 4 or 5 levels with several state rooms and balconies on each level overlooking the castle courtyard. Once at the top we had excellent views over the Reservoir of Manzanares el Real from the one side and views of the mountains and town on the other sides. See more..

    Archbishop Palace image
The Renaissance exterior of the complex speaks of the wealth and power of the city’s Toledo archbishops. The grounds take up the northwest corner of the historic core. Built in the 13th century, it has seen several noteworthy events, including the birth of Catherine of Aragon [1485] and the first meeting place of Christopher Columbus and the Catholic kings [1486]. Once reputedly one of the best Renaissance palaces in all of Europe, it went into decline when the capital of Spain was moved to Madrid in 1561. Much work had to be done after a catastrophic fire in 1939. There is some parking on site. See more..

  6. 5.0 La Torre De Éboli (1 review)
    - Merece la pena echarle un vistazo
Wednesday: Historic Sites • Lookouts • Castles
