Monastery of San Juan de la Peña, Aragon, Spain

Absolutely unique!
I love bringing people to see this place! Set in a cliff, you have to come up a narrow winding road, round bend after bend, and suddenly you see the Romanesque cloister and you feel as if the cliff will fall at any moment. The first sight is quite something! San Juan de la Peña is a collection of buildings; the spectacular old monastery, some of which dates back to the 8th century, inhabited until the 16th century when it was devastated by fire. The monks then moved to the room of the hill and built the new monastery, of which just a few walls remain, but they are displayed in such a way that you walk over transparent floors and see the white, ghostly figures of the monks in their ruined cells. An amazing visit, to be thoroughly recommended!

Special site in Spanish history.
An 11th century monastery hidden in the hills of Aragon. Its evolution over centuries of construction and almost continuous use from 1100 BCE into the 1700's is amazing to contemplate. The buildings are carved into a remote hillside and expanded by brick and stone. The monastery's contributions to Aragon and Spanish history are extensive. Curation is all in Spanish. An hour+ drive out of Zaragoza but worth it.
