Religious Sites
This place is easy to walk by, but make sure you visit. Many many pillars, some new, some very old, all highly decorated with wood carvings, sometimes with a deeper, symbolic or religious meaning to it. Very beautiful. The pillars rest on stone with camel hair in between to prevent the bugs from having a feast. It also makes it easier to replace the pillar if needed. Many pillars are donated to the mosque by families or individuals. See more..
- 4.5 Mohammed Amin Madrassah (308 reviews)
-Calm and wondrous strolling
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
Ulli Hovli complex is a large but very walkable restored old fortress. It supposedly has about three thousand residents along with several restaurants. It reminded me of wandering in Dubrovnik or Disney World, except everything is related to Muslim culture. Our hotel , Hitel Asia, is across the street from this complex. Saw a few wedding parties that eventuality ended up in a mausoleum where the newly weds get blessed. We lingered in an old mosque with perhaps over 200 wooden columns, although they all looked the same but each one is different. See more..

- 4.5 Kalta Minor Minaret (135 reviews)
-Point for orientation
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Religious Sites
Most advertising materials for Khiva feature the Kalta Minor Minaret ; it the # 1 symbol for Ichan Kala. It is also a handy point of reference if you get lost in the alleys. The tower is an unfinished minaret, stopped at 26m when Amin Khan died on a Persian battlefield mid 19th century. Imagine if it had reached its intended height of 70m ! Covered in Khiva's blue-green tiles in dazzling patterns it is a photographers delight. See more..
- 4.5 Polvon Darvoza Gates (8 reviews)
-Slave Gate
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings
I thought this Eastern Gate was the best of all. And the one with the most exotic names : Slave Gate or Gate of Execution. This is where the ugly business of slave trading (until 1873 !) and execution was done. Originally build in the 13th century, most of what we see now dates back to early 19th. See more..

-Renovated West Gate
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
The West gate seems to be used as the main entrance into Itchan Kala. It was renovated in 1975 and it astonishes me how they could get it so wrong ; it is part of the city walls, but the white bricks they used are totally different from the adobe material of the fortifications. People travel to Khiva to see authenticity, not replicas ! The plastic caravan and camels in front don't help either . . . See more..

- 4.0 Mohammed Rakhim Khan Madrassah (8 reviews)
-A rather apologetic narrative on the history of the Khiva khanate
Friday: 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
As often happens in Khiva, this medressa (Koranic school) isn't ancient: it dates from the mid-19th century. However, it's splendid for its decorations, and gives a clear view of the structure of the medressas, characterized by the numerous cells for the students (in this case there are 76). I would like to focus my attention on the part of the medressa that is used as a museum on the history of the Khiva khanate, to note that this story seemed somewhat sweetened to me. The tale starts from the 16th century to trace the history of the so-called Khanate of Khorasmia (and of which Khiva was the capital). In particular, Khan Shergazi is known for having treacherously massacred in 1717 - having initially hosted them in his territory - about 4000 Russian soldiers, sent by Tsar Peter I "the Great" at the request of Shergazi's predecessor. The story in the exhibition is told as follows: Shergazi was a "wise and daring prince" and "defeated" an army of Russian invaders. I also didn't notice anywhere in the small museum a hint that for decades the Khiva Khanate's main source of income was the slave trade. Overall, I think a less apologetic story would be desirable. - 4.0 Trolleybuses in Urgench (2 reviews)
-The only Trolleybus route in Uzbekistan
Friday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Public Transportation Systems
The Trolleybus from Urgench to Khiva is the only Trolleybus route in Uzbekistan. The route is numbered 2, and it travels between the cities every 30 minutes. The bus can be boarded at Tinchlik street in front of the Bazaar. Taxis are the faster and preferred option by most locals, but if you are not in a rush, the trolleybus covers the 31 km route in 45 minutes, with 24 stops along the way. This is a great way to see the city at a slow pace, and is the cheapest transportation option to Khiva. The fare was approximately 1,500 som and is payable to the driver on entering the bus. We were the only tourists on the bus, and a few persons wanted to take photos with us.The bus stops at the Northern inner city gate of the Khiva old town. This is a perfect option for a day trip to Khiva, if you are staying in Urgench. The route was opened in 1998, and became the only route when the Tashkent route closed in 2010. We had traveled on Trolleybuses in all the Central Asian countries except Uzbekistan, so were happy to finally experience this. Attractions near to the trolleybus stop in Urgench include the Island of Miniatures and Amir Timur park. See more..

- 4.0 Palvan Kori Minaret (2 reviews)
-Unique European styled minaret
Friday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
The Palvan Kori Minaret was one of the first attractions that we saw on our arrival in Khiva. We walked from the train station on Polvon Kori Street which bisects the old city as it's main street. This is one of six minarets on a east to west line of sight through Khiva. This is the only cylindrical designed minaret in the city. It serves at the focal point of the complex which also includes a madrasah. We were eager to visit the madrasah, as we heard that it was built in a mix of Asian and European architectural styles. Unfortunately the madrasah was undergoing repairs and there was no access as debris was outside the main entrance, and we could hear workmen inside. We viewed the portal ,domes and the guldastas which were visible from outside. The portal and guldastas still have decorative tiles, but a few had fallen off. There were four decorative ribbons on the minaret and five arch shaped windows with screens near to the top. There were stalactite designs just below the green cap. A crescent shape monument topped the minaret. The height of the minaret is 21 meters. The minaret and madrasah were completed in 1905, by a wealthy merchant, Palvan Kari. The street running in front of the complex is named in honour of Palvan, and the eastern gate of the inner city is also named in his honour - Palvan darvaza. Hopefully the repairs to the madrasah can soon be completed, so that the complex may be restored to it's former glory. Another minaret is a short walk to the left in the Abd Al Bobo complex. Note that these minarets are outside the inner city, as is the case with the Bikajon Bika minaret, which is a short walk west of the inner city west gate. See more..
