This boutique is artful and unique. Custom-made clothing is made from a variety of specially-sourced fabrics and are unique pieces of art. The owner is a passionate lover of textiles and an art historian who was previously a museum curator. She was extremely welcoming and treated me to coffee while sharing her stories and interests. Regional Studies Museum image
A short walk from our hotel in Samarkand, we took a look at the Regional Studies Museum in August 2017 as part of our drive around the ‘stans. It wasn’t an expensive entrance fee and we paid a bit extra to be able to take pictures and film a short segment as well. The tour in Russian was very good what we could catch with three languages plus the impromptu hand jive and a bit of sketching got us a wealth of information about the museum and the history of the area which is fascinating to be sure. It is certainly a lesser known attraction around these parts but very worthwhile if you can make it here. We enjoyed our time and would return. See more..

Tourists visit Samarkand mainly for the Timurid monuments ; and there's plenty of them, so enough to keep you busy. But the bazaar really is the true remnant of the Silk Road, it is the beating heart of every city in Central Asia - so spend some time there. Gumbaz Synagogue image
This very special synagogue located in the old city of Samarkand, is a wonderful place to visit to be able to connect with the Jewish community that once thrived there. As in many countries around the world wherever there was a Jewish community life seemed to be rich in culture, neighborhood friendships and many shops. Today the majority of the Jewish community have left for Israel and their absence is very much felt. Talking to one of the neighbors she stressed how much she misses her Jewish friend who now lives in Israel. The synagogue is taken care by the sweetest Jewish man and he refuses to leave and move to Israel...he told me he cannot leave the synagogue unattended. Anyone from the Jewish community visiting the synagogue PLEASE leave a donation to help with the up keep of this beautiful treasure, a donation is considered a MITZVAH ! Michelle - Israel See more..

    Urgut Market image
About 40km from Samarkand is the Urgut Market. The best time to visit is in the weekend with Sunday being the busiest day. This is a huge market selling everything for the locals such as clothing, food and hardware. For the tourist you can find traditional handicrafts such as carpets, metalwork, ceramics and jewellery, the main attraction being old textiles. At the back of the market you can find the textile area with ladies who are very determined to sell you their wares. The prices are very reasonable, but you do have to bargain hard. Suzanis of all sizes, old clothing, wall hangings - I am still regretting not buying a couple of items.....next time. See more..
