  1. 5.0 The Extra Mile Tours (17 reviews)
    - A great tour of an "unexplored" Alaskan port....
    Sightseeing Tours
    The Extra Mile Tours image
We visited Dutch Harbor in September during our cruise.and Bobbie of Extra Mile Tours did an excellent job introducing us to this lovely island. There is a lot of history here and as other reviewers have mentioned, it takes a local to really tell you about the history. Bobbie made a special arrangement with the church (which was actually closed the day we were there) to have someone open the church for our group to show and tell us about its history. I would highly recommend Bobbie and Extra Mile Tours whenever you visit this area. See more..

Captain Asia did a wonderful job showing us nature, birds, and marine mammals in the waters surrounding Unalaska. Her boat was clean and comfortable. We went inside the heated cabin to warm up between sightings. We would recommend this tour to everyone visiting Unalaska. See more..
  3. 5.0 Aleutian World War II National Historic Area (6 reviews)
    - Amazing Views
    National Parks
Aleutian World War II National Historic Area image
The road up to the Historic area is Ulatka Drive, off of Ballyhoo road just past Resolve Marine Salvage. It's the only steep road up the mountain. It's an amazing place with incredible views. It's easy to spend several hours wandering around. If you like to hike it provides easy access to hike up Ballyhoo. If hiking you want to grad a pass from the Ounalashka Corporation office behind the Grand Aleutian hotel. Most of the land is private property so you need a pass for access. There are old bunkers and gun emplacements and lots of old building remains. Wild flowers abound in the summer, ground squirrels, eagles and other birds. Sometimes to can see whales feeding all around the island. Super cool place and definitely a must visit if you have time. See more..
  4. 4.5 Aleutian World War II National Historic Area Visitor Center (55 reviews)
    - Must See in Dutch Harbor
    Spent 2-3 hours Visitor Centers
Aleutian World War II National Historic Area Visitor Center image
This is a small but well thought out museum located on the second floor of the visitors center. This was the the former air base control tower and houses a movie room, photos and original radio equipment that was actually used during World War Two. It offers a great view of the present airport to view any activity occuring. See more..

    Museum of the Aleutians image
The Museum of the Aleutians is a cultural history institution for the Aleutian Islands and the community of Unalaska. The museum opened its doors in 1999 with the mission to collect, preserve, and research the cultural history and prehistory of the Aleutian Islands region. Through actively growing Unangan, Russian-American, WWII, and local art collections, the museum provides stimulating permanent and changing exhibits, as well as a home to researchers, visitors, and community members. Fishing Vessel Lucille image
If you like catching big fish in an amazing local, go out with Dave on the F/V Lucille. My wife and I went out with him on our visit to Dutch and were very happy with the experience. The scenery around Unalaska is just incredible, and we were luck enough to have a sunny day. Definitely worth the price (just $200) if you're going to be out there. See more..
  8. 4.5 Holy Ascension of Our Lord Cathedral Russian Orthodox (3 reviews)
    - Beautiful bit of history
    Churches & Cathedrals
Holy Ascension of Our Lord Cathedral Russian Orthodox image
This is the one site on Unalaska Island we HAD to see. A kindly local gave us a ride in the back of his pickup out to the church, and we walked the 6 miles back to the ferry in Dutch Harbor. Wish we could have gone inside, but Covid... Nothing to do here but take in the sights, 15 minutes max. Could definitely use a coat of paint - since the church is now on the Register of Historic Sites, it'd be a shame if it deteriorated any further. The similar Holy Resurrection ROC on Kodiak Island is better looking, but this one has a better setting. See more..
