The road up to the Historic area is Ulatka Drive, off of Ballyhoo road just past Resolve Marine Salvage. It's the only steep road up the mountain. It's an amazing place with incredible views. It's easy to spend several hours wandering around. If you like to hike it provides easy access to hike up Ballyhoo. If hiking you want to grad a pass from the Ounalashka Corporation office behind the Grand Aleutian hotel. Most of the land is private property so you need a pass for access. There are old bunkers and gun emplacements and lots of old building remains. Wild flowers abound in the summer, ground squirrels, eagles and other birds. Sometimes to can see whales feeding all around the island. Super cool place and definitely a must visit if you have time. See more..
