Holy Ascension of Our Lord Cathedral Russian Orthodox, Alaska, United States

4.5 (3 reviews) Spent Ranking #7 in Aleutian Islands Churches & Cathedrals

Beautiful bit of history

This is the one site on Unalaska Island we HAD to see. A kindly local gave us a ride in the back of his pickup out to the church, and we walked the 6 miles back to the ferry in Dutch Harbor. Wish we could have gone inside, but Covid... Nothing to do here but take in the sights, 15 minutes max. Could definitely use a coat of paint - since the church is now on the Register of Historic Sites, it'd be a shame if it deteriorated any further. The similar Holy Resurrection ROC on Kodiak Island is better looking, but this one has a better setting.

    Nice
An old Russian Orthodox Church that is still an active parish. A nice visit foe 20 minutes. Explore side altars.

Stunning Cathedral, beautiful iconography, historic cemetery
The Cathedral is centrally located and easy to find. It's beautifully maintained and of historic interest. It was built in 1826, along a traditional, cross shape, style. The main altar and most of the many icons are in the main body of the Cathedral, with two smaller altars in the two 'arms' of the cross. If you're really lucky Father will be around and will give you a comprehensive tour, pointing out icons of significance, describing how the parishioners scrambled to hide their icons in the face of invading troops in WWII, and answering all your questions. Just opposite the lynch gate you'll see a smart deep blue house with a red roof. This is the Bishop's House. There's no access inside, as such, but it's a beautiful, historic home and worth admiring from outside.
