My friend and I went on a trip to look at the mines at Bradda and a wonder around the Calf. We stopped a few times on route where we were given some info on the wildlife and ship wrecks etc. We had sun, mist and rain but that didn’t dampen the experience. The hot chocolate was most welcome and our hosts were lovely. The seals were inquisitive but on this occasion no dolphins. I will certainly be visiting again hopefully with a longer stay on the Calf. Thanks guys! See more..

    St Mary's Church image
Port St Mary is a bustling village with a busy harbour and became popular with holiday makers when the railway arrived in the late C19th. St Mary’s church was built in 1884. The parish church of Kirk Christ was midway between Port Erin and Port St Mary, and a long walk, especially in the winter. It was also becoming too small to accommodate the extra holiday makers. The church was consecrated a few months later with no organ, heating, light or a porch. A tower was added later and gas lighting installed. Electricity didn’t arrive to this part of the island until 1930 when it was installed in the church. It is an imposing large stone built church surrounded by grass and set back from Bay View Road. It has a low square tower on the south side. Inside it is a very plain church apart from the lovely C20th stained glass windows, which glow in the sunlight. See more..

    - The tallest of the early Christian crosses

    Ballaqueeney Cross image
Standing at the cross roads of the A5 and A29, this is is a familiar landmark to anyone travelling between Port St Mary and Port Erin. It is the tallest standing stone on the island dating from 900-950 AD and is thought to be the work of the well known Viking sculptor, Gaut. It would originally have been covered with carvings like Gaut’s Cross in Kirk Michael church, but are weathered and no longer distinguishable. The two holes were made much later. The cross originally stood near the ancient Ballaqueeny keeil and was moved here in 1951. This is one that can be admired from the car as you drive past.... The nearest post code is IM9 5LF and the grid reference is SC 206688. See more..
