Abbey Church Of St Mary The Virgin image
Ballasalla is in the parish of Malew and the original parish church of St Lupus was a mile away. Not only was it a long walk but, as the population grew, St Lupus was no longer able to seat everyone. A new church was built in the village. The Abbey Church of St Mary is a large and impressive building, constructed from Scarlett limestone. It has a square offset tower with a small pointed roof. The foundation stone was laid in 1895 and the church was dedicated in 1897, although it wasn’t consecrated until 1907. Inside it is a large church but does feel quite gloomy, even on a bright sunny day, which made taking pictures quite difficult. Walls are whitewashed and it has a dark beamed ceiling in the nave, with mock oil lamps hanging from it. There is wood panelling around the base of the walls, with bench pews. The simple stone font is at the back of the church. The chancel is narrower than the nave and the stones of the chancel arch are painted black. The chancel has a simple wood panelled barrel ceiling. To the right of the chancel arch is the pulpit which has a mosaic cross set into the wood. The wood altar has five crosses carved on the base, representing the five wounds of Christ. The reredos has the symbols for alpha and omega as well as panels with the Ten Commandments and the Creed. The east window is mid C20th with Christ in the centre, flanked with St Germanus and St Lupus. There are two rather nice late C20th stained glass windows in the nave. The remaining windows contain the original Victorian diamond shape tinted glass. Although described as the Abbey Church, this is not to be confused with the ruins of Rushen Abbey! It isn’t 'MUST SEE', but just a short detour on the way to Rushen Abbey and work having a quick look when passing. See more..
