    Gaiety Theatre image
Had a fascinating back stage tour, the funds from which go directly to the restoration fund. Superb chandeliers have been purchased from the previous proceeds. An excellent tour lasting over 2 hours gets you from under the stage (where all the Various trapdoors etc are explained), into the auditorium, right up to the Highest seating area and beyond, to the film projection rooms and equipment from its use as an early cinema. Such a stunning theatre that has been restored to its Victorian opulence. I have hearing loss yet the guide was so clear I could hear every word. Don't miss this Saturday morning experience. Andrew had a tremendous knowledge about all aspects of the island and was able to communicate this in an interesting and informative way. His in-depth descriptions added tremendous value to the days we spent with him on our U3A tour. He really helped to bring the island, its history and its people to life. He worked diligently to make sure that he was fully prepared for every aspect that we encountered. He was adept at meeting the range of needs of the whole group and interacted with everyone in a friendly and supportive manner. Would highly recommend, without hesitation. See more..

The bikes on show are brilliant and every inch of wall space covered in photographs of racers, visitors, friends and any manner of bike related subject. Brilliant couple of hours to be fair. Especially loved the motorised chopper bike, what i wouldnt have given for one when i was 11. See more..

  9. 5.0 Castletown Golf Links (47 reviews)
    - Fantastic in every way
Monday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent More than 3 hours Golf Courses • Game & Entertainment Centers
    Castletown Golf Links image
Castletown Golf Links is a unique championship golf course situated on the Langness Peninsula in the Isle of Man, surrounded by the sea on all three sides. The Isle of Man occupies just about the same area as Greater London - no more than 33 miles long and less than half that distance at its widest point. At Castletown golf is mostly played well above sea level, with views at every hole of tumbling cliffs, rocky outcrops, sweeping bays and, of course, the ever present sea. Yet the playing conditions are pure links golf - tight-knit, quick draining turf and smooth, fast running greens, with gorse, whispy fescues, and heather defining fairways. The original Castletown Club was formed in 1892 and holes were laid out on the present site in the early 1900's by Old Tom Morris, widely regarded as the modern pioneer of golf. Just a few years before he had confirmed to a potential client: "My fee for laying out a green is One Pound Sterling and travelling expenses", so the exercise was not too costly! Following the Second World War, the course was re-designed and restored by the very well-respected architect, Mackenzie Ross, and it is that course which is in play today. With water on all sides and two magnificent bays carving swathes along each flank, it is a dramatic and wonderfully natural site for a golf course. See more..
  10. 4.5 Isle of Man Bus and Rail (1.299 reviews)
    - Wonderful Bus Service
    Public Transportation Systems
Isle of Man Bus and Rail image
My friend and I purchased a 5 day Go explore bus and rail ticket. It cost us £43 each, but it is well worth it if you havent any other means of transport to get around the Island. The buses are frequent, and the drivers are friendly and helpful. They even wait for passengers running to the buses, something you dont see in Cities in England. The trains only run on certain day, but you are given a timetable when the tickets are purchased. Daily explore tickets can be purchased on board the buses, but if you want to purchase tickets for longer than they can be purchased online before travelling, but allow approx 2 weeks before you go, as they are posted to you. We purchased ours from the welcome desk in the ferry port in Doulgas. However note that the desk closes at 6pm and isnt open on Sundays. Unsure if there is a similar desk at the Airport. See more..

    - A journey into yesteryear
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Isle of Man Steam Railway image
This steam train travels faster than the electric railway. It runs through pretty countryside to the south part of the island. It stops at several places on route to Port Erin. There are several steam engines with individual names all beautifully polished with gleaming brass. The carriages do not have corridors or toilets. They have compartments seating 4 either side or some are open with rows of seats. There are windows which can be lowered and held in place with a leather strap. A very worthwhile experience. Castle Rushen is one of the world’s most finely preserved medieval castles and can be found in the Isle of Man's former capital, Castletown. Once a royal palace, Castle Rushen was home to the Kings and Lords of Mann, with the Castle’s oldest part dating back to the time of Magnus, last Norse King of Mann. Later on, Castle Rushen served as an administrative centre, a mint, a law court and for over 100 years until the late 19th Century, as a prison. Snaefell Mountain Railway image
As the weather was not great we decided to take maintain train Snaefell around lunch time hoping that clouds would not be too low and that we would have some views. The ride was approximately 30 minutes but as we were the last passengers to board we did not have window seat which was a shame. Preferable option would be to sit on the right side for going up as the views of the countryside are spectacular. On the summit it was cloudy but we did managed to see a bit of Ireland. Afterwards we went to coffee shop for tea and managed to get next train back. However there was a big queue and people were rushing and grabbing window seats so once again we did not have direct views of the nature. See more..

Living on the Isle of Man I very rarely have need to use the Welcome Centre in the sea terminal, but I did today, as it is one of the places you can pick up pre booked tickets for the Villa Marina and Gaiety theatre I came here to do just that, because parking is easy and free. I was surprised to see just how much they offer visitors to the Island - maps. guide books, timetables and souvenirs aplenty! I even picked up a free, brand new replacement for my old, wrinkled parking disc! The nicest surprise however, was the lovely, warm welcome from the lady on the welcome desk; friendly, efficient service with a smile. A credit to our island! See more..

The Old House of Keys image
The Old House of Keys in Castletown was once the centre of 19th century political life on the Island. The building is one chapter in the long and often turbulent history of Manx politics which stretches back to the 9th and 10th centuries when the Viking Kings ruled the Isle of Man. The fascinating Old House of Keys building has been restored to its former appearance of 1866 – a milestone in Manx history when the old self-elected House of Keys took its first steps along the road to modern democracy by passing the House of Keys Election Bill and becoming a popularly elected body. During your visit you’ll see how democracy developed in the Island – sometimes years ahead of England – and the effect that political decisions have had and continue to have on the Manx nation. You’ll meet the costumed secretary of this historic building before taking a seat in the finely restored debating chamber where you’ll enjoy an active debate on setting the laws of the Island.
