    The Great Laxey Wheel image
Designed by the Victorian engineer Robert Casement, the Laxey Wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from Glen Mooar which was part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex.Standing at over 72 feet high the wheel, which is also known as Lady Isabella, has been one of the Isle of Man’s most popular tourist attractions for well over 150 years. You’ll have the opportunity to watch the wheel turning before attempting to climb to the top where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views across the Glen Mooar Valley. Once back on solid ground you can walk through the valley to find the Great Laxey Mines – learn about the lives of the miners, walk into the mine audit and take a trip on the Great Laxey Mines Railway which was once used to carry lead and zinc ores from deep inside the Great Laxey Mine. Snaefell image
Travelling up the mountain on a hot, sunny day was a great experience. From the summit thee views in every direction were amazing, with Ireland to the west and England to the east. Far below us, we were able to watch and listen to the would-be TT riders doing they best to emulate their heroes. A great experience. However, clear weather is essential to enjoy the views. 5. 4.5 Snaefell Mountain Railway (393 reviews)
    - Great experience
Spent 1-2 hours Trams • Rail Services
    Snaefell Mountain Railway image
As the weather was not great we decided to take maintain train Snaefell around lunch time hoping that clouds would not be too low and that we would have some views. The ride was approximately 30 minutes but as we were the last passengers to board we did not have window seat which was a shame. Preferable option would be to sit on the right side for going up as the views of the countryside are spectacular. On the summit it was cloudy but we did managed to see a bit of Ireland. Afterwards we went to coffee shop for tea and managed to get next train back. However there was a big queue and people were rushing and grabbing window seats so once again we did not have direct views of the nature. See more..

  8. 4.5 Dhoon Glen (4 reviews)
    - One of the island's most dramatic glens
Spent 1-2 hours Nature & Wildlife Areas
    Dhoon Glen image
This is described as one of the island’s most dramatic glens. A stream tumbles down through the steep sided and wooded glen to reach the beach 500’ feet below. (It can be a steep walk back up!) The area has been improved since Covid and there is now a large picnic area beside the MER station along with a very good cafe (open Friday-Sundays). There is a map at the start of the glen showing footpaths. Those shown as dotted yellow and orange lines are described as suitable ‘for beginner walkers’. They are well made although there are quite a few steps! The red and orange paths leading up to the waterfall are described as ‘for experienced walkers.’ It is a very attractive walk. See more..

  10. 4.0 Laxey Glen (17 reviews)
    - Peaceful
    Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas • Forests
    Laxey Glen image
Went here with the dogs as it was difficult to find anywhere where they could run off their leads and enjoy themselves. Most of the Isle of Man beaches didn't allow dogs and neither did any of the parks so our poor dogs had a bit of a bad time of it staying on a short lead all the time or not being allowed into some places at all. This was a beautifully peaceful place where they could run about freely, paddle in the river and generally enjoy themselves. The going is not too rough but walking shoes would be best to get the most enjoyable experience out of it and the path follows the Laxey River most of the time, only deviating upwards where the bank is impassable sometimes. If you want a bit of peace and quiet and a safe dog walk, then this is for you. See more..
