    Site of Palmyra image
I visited Palmyra in June 2005 and besides the bedouins who live there me and a friend and my daughter were the only people there, absolutely beyond beautiful. My daughter hired a horse from a bedouin boy and explored on horseback while i eplored on foot by myself to walk to the tombs on the outskirts of Palmyra. It was so quiet and peaceful. Then i explored the ampitheatre and the colonnaded street. Even though i was alone i felt completely safe. Magnificent ruins and temples and even a crusader castle on a hill above the ruins although i didnt have time to visit the castle. All in all if Syria ever has peace again please visit this beautiful country and ruined city, If there is anything left to see, you wont be disappointed. See more..

Qala'at al-Hosn (Krac des Chevaliers) image
Stunning castle with tremendous history, originally a Kurdish castle then expanded by the Crusaders and then the Mamuluk. The castle sits atop of a hill and first sight is amazing, you need a couple of hours to walk round inside as this is a large Castle. Great views from the top and usually no safety railing everywhere. See more..

    Roman Theatre of Palmyra image
The Famous Archaeological Site of Palmyra has always been the top tour site in all of Syria. The old Roman Amphitheater was always a high light of every tour Unfortunately today it is being destroyed by the terrorist Group called: Daesh or ISIL. I have been blessed to have visited Palmyra many time over the past 40+ years. You had always needed two or three days to really appreciate the full site. Today it is off limits due to the occupation of Palmyra! We all hope and pray that the remaining Archaeological Site will be spared from further destruction! See more..
  4. 4.5 Muslim Castle Qala'at ibn Maan (22 reviews)

Muslim Castle Qala'at ibn Maan image
Perched high atop the mountain it rests on overlooking the truly marvellous Palmyra, the Muslim Castle is a superb cap to the extraordinary adventure that is the historic site of Palmyra. It dominates the landscape and constantly reminds the visitor of the remarkable heritage of this area with its enormous Roman ruins overlooked by an Islamic Castle. The drive up to the top of the mountain is worth the effort because from there not only can you see the castle at first hand but you gain a wonderful perspective of the historic site below. Khalid ibn Al-Walid Mosque image
Large ottoman style mosque, the surrounding buildings are collapsed. But they are trying to fix/renovate it. It's a sad and interesting view of the damaged street from here. You get to see closely how the houses were damage from the war. The mosque is fine and it's beautiful.i recommend to have this in your itinerary See more..

    Um al-Zennar Church image
A historical and ancient church, significant for Christians. This church holds part of the belt piece from Virgin Mary. Part of the church is new. And there is part of the old one underground. It's interesting and worth to pay a short visit. See more..
  8. 4.0 Palmyra Museum (18 reviews)
    - Amazing Museum

    Palmyra Museum image
The Palmyra Museum is a must on any visit to Palmyra. It actually has a lot of very interesting artefacts and is much less congested than the National Museum in Damascus. We visited in 2002 and it was a stunning display of over 4,000 years of history. Unfortunately the Museum was ravaged by the current conflict, although a lot of the artefacts apparently made it to safety and hopefully will return some day, along with the Museum. See more..
