- 5.0 Dead City of Serjilla (18 reviews)
-Very Interesting, Worth the Visti
Ancient Ruins
There are a number of "Dead Cities" in this part of Syria, basically ancient ghost towns. Serjilla is supposed to be the most intact one and my wife and I found it fascinating, very fun to explore on your own. It is has several good informational markers throughout. It "opens" at 9AM but there are no barriers to entry so you can get there for sunrise photos and by the time you are done the staff is there and you can pay them as you leave. And it has some very nice restrooms for such an out of the way place - hey, these things are important :-) Note that it is actually closer to Hama (65KM) than Aleppo (80KM). The nearest main town is Maarat an Numan. If you are going from Aleppo to Hama or vice versa this makes for a good stop. See more..

Still a remarkable place with so much history. You can see damage around the buildings outside snd there is damage in the citadel but still worth a visit snd hopefully in time dome of the damage can be restored. Points of Interest & Landmarks
I recently went on a tour of Syria visiting Damascus, Al Wadi, Homs, Hama and Aleppo. The highlight of the tour was visiting Madame Rubhino in the famous Hotel Baron and making new friends. The trip was organised by Carly Fillis who was my guide for the trip to Iraq last year. Carly has a love for Syria and organised this for me through Golden Target Tours based in Damascus. My guide was a wonderful person called Hussein and was exceptionally good at his job. I was saddened by my time in Syria, didn’t feel threatened or in danger and would advise people to visit to get the tourist industry moving. I would visit again. See more..
- 4.5 Turkish Bath (Hammam Yalbougha al-Nasri ) (10 reviews)
-Good place to relax
Health Clubs • Architectural Buildings • Spas
This is a good place to spend an evening after long and tiring day. I bought there a so called full option (around 12$) You start from the sauna ( the dry one) then you move to the room with is a bit colder then the first one full of steam (this is so called Turkish bath) then you move to some room. And on the floor of it the guy came and do the scratching (kind of peeling) but guy use a big glove and by it scratch your skin. Then you move to the massage room. Finally after the shower, some man cover you in plenty of towels and you are resting in a beautiful room drinking Arabic tea or coffee. Good experience. See more..

-All these beauties are gone now.
Points of Interest & Landmarks
I traveled Aleppo in September 2010 when everything was standing and people were happy. It was the Holy Ramadan month and people were on streets until 4 am. Everyone was smiling and they were really gentle. I have also visited Armenian, Greek and Maronite churches that do not stand anymore. We had talked to the deacon in the Armenian Church all night long but I suppose he is dead now. The bazar that we shopped, the streets we walked and the cafes where we met gentle and humble local people are all destroyed now. It gives me so much pain to see the city and its people to suffer like that. It is not Syrians' fault and hope everything is gonna get better one day. Before it gets too late. Time changes everything but does not wash the crimes of terror.. See more..
- 4.0 Ebla (3 reviews)
-First visit to Ebla after its liberation, These ruins are worth a visit
Ancient Ruins
Ebla, also spelled Tell Mardikh, ancient city 33 miles (53 km) southwest of Aleppo in northwest Syria. During the height of its power (2600-2240 BC), Ebla controlled northern Syria, Lebanon, and parts of northern Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) and enjoyed trade and diplomatic relations with countries as far away as Egypt, Iran, and Sumer. The excavation of the mound (the hill) now known as the site of Ebla began in 1964 with a team of archaeologists from the University of Rome led by Paolo Mattai. In 1975, Matai's team found the archives of Ebla, dating back to the third millennium BC. More than 17,000 cuneiform tablets and clay fragments have been discovered See more..
- 4.0 Ancient Villages of Northern Syria (1 review)
-Nice late antiquity buildings in the countryside
Spent More than 3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
These villages, called mostly Dead Cities, were deserted in the early 7th century. Sergilla has a separate entry. It is the nicest of them, with many churches, houses, tombs. Al-Bara is another one. It has a massive tomb or two. Not like the puny ones in Sergilla (which were just sarcophagi), but an actual, big one. There are also a couple of churches there, nicely preserved. The city of Al-Bara is mostly known as being captured by the first crusade, who installed a bishop there. There are other monuments in these vicinities, but mostly just ancient houses. To get there, you have to organise your transport yourself - or by a hotel in Hama. There is also a church is Qalb Lozeh and the St Simon's Citadel west from Aleppo, as well as ruins of ancient palace in Qasr Ibn Wardan. See more..
- 3.0 Aleppo Museum (7 reviews)
-Excellent range of exhibits--well worth an hour and a half
Speciality Museums
The Aleppo Museum seems to have gotten a bad reputation (no thanks to Lonely Planet's uncharacteristically unhelpful review). If there was renovation going on at this museum in the past, it now appears to be finished and well-worth the efforts. I recommend a visit for anyone touring Aleppo. The museum features a wide-range of historical periods, not unlike the National Museum in Damascus. There are a number of fascinating pieces from earlier periods, all with signs (if not terribly informative ones). The most interesting pieces for me were a series of black statues that are replicas--the originals were sent to Germany in the early 20th century for "safe-keeping" and were subsequently destroyed during WWII. A word to the wise--the museum is not heated during the winter months. This is not unusual, it seems, in Syria, but do dress warmly. See more..
