Church of Nativity of Most Holy Mother of God image
The Christmas or Stroganov Orthodox Church is one of my favorites not only in Nizhny Novgorod, but also in Russia. The combination of pink walls and white stone carvings looks very elegant. The highlight of the church is that the heads of the temple at the end of the 19th century, they were painted like the heads of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. The chapters were originally green. Windows, portals of entrances, additional columns are decorated with white stone carvings. Definitely worth a visit. See more..

Museum of Old Equipment and Tools image
You do not have to love technology to enjoy this unusual museum. In a two-room exhibition, the museum displays a variety of objects from a private collection, most of which were lovingly restored by hand. You will find a lot of well-preserved Soviet relicts as well as a stunning penny farthing bicycle from Germany. The friendly museum guide was ready to answer all my questions on the topic. Recommended! Advice: enter the museum through the mirror door on the right hand of the building and walk upstairs until you get to the heavy iron door. See more..

    Mountain Levitan image
Traditional wooded church. Stunning views. I was told by local guide that the crosses, in the cemetery, are not original for that region. They are rather the style of more northern regions of Russia. Nevertheless, the site if magnificent. Very good place to be contemplative, sit and read a book. See more..

    - A large and beautiful ancient monastery
    Churches & Cathedrals
    Pechersky Ascension Monastery image
A large ancient monastery located almost near the river. The territory is fenced with a high wall. First you get to the alley, to the right of which is the alley of the Romanovs, where there are busts of representatives of this last royal dynasty. Ahead you see the impressive Ascension Cathedral. I was here in the winter and moved along the narrow cleared paths. The monastery cemetery was covered with snow. The cathedral was closed, but going up the stairs through the passage I got to the Assumption Church. It is very beautiful, with stunning wall murals. In the neighboring building - the bishops' building, there is a church and archaeological museum. Definitely worth a visit! See more..

  18. 4.5 The Church of Ilya the Prophet (653 reviews)
    - Two years passed...
    Churches & Cathedrals
The Church of Ilya the Prophet image
But this forever young beauty is as charming as before. I visited it in September, on a bright golden autumn weekday. The church was open since it was rather warm. I stepped inside. Practically no-one around. Spell-binding old frescoes, icons, a magnificent iconostasis, fragrance of frankincence, soft crackling of burning candles. And silence. Enveloping silence. I love you, Ilya. It's somewhat puzzling, however, that one has to pay an entrance fee to see that splendor. They say it's a museum. Okay, it is. But first of all, it's a place of worship, a place to pray. For dough? Still, strongly recommended! A unique drawcard any city on earth would be proud of. (Parking nearby is a challenge - too many official institutions around. Try smaller streets a bit further.) See more..

This is probably the most beautiful street in Nizhny Novgorod. She retained the flavor inherent in this merchant city. Many beautiful merchant mansions and street decorations have been preserved here - the Nativity Cathedral, which gave the name to the street. Any tourist should take a walk here. In addition to beautiful views, there are many of the city's most popular cafes and restaurants. See more..
  22. 4.5 Monument to Afonya And Plasterer Kolya (187 reviews)
    - Rendezvous with familiar characters
    Monuments & Statues
Monument to Afonya And Plasterer Kolya image
If you are a fan of old Russian movies, or simply watched the old Soviet film "Afonya", then this small monument might be of interest to you. Located in the alleys behind the Alyosha Popovich Dvor hotel (near the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery) right by the Afonya cafe, it's a dedication to the two beloved characters from the Russian film with the same name. As the story has it – the film tells us about plumber Afanasiy Boschyov, and even though it's never stated in the movie, it is known, that many places in Yaroslavl were filmed for "Afonya" in 1974.
