    - unforgiving mountain

    Mount Elbrus image
End of september 2013 we (8) took the northern route to try to reach the top. Trip to base camp was fun and enjoyable with wooden sheds to sleep in. Hardly any climbers and had the camp almost for ourselves. During the move to high camp we got hit by blizzard winds and snow. Did stay at high camp under trying circumstances and both our second sleeping tent and eating area blew away. As the situation got worse our cook left and our team was left with only 1 local guide. Decided to stay a bit longer but with no sign of improving weather we went back to base camp were the sun warmed us up. For our team this was the first mountain that did not allow to reach the top. Will come back another time but the northern route on the Elbrus is one tough climb, if you have less time or want a better chance of reaching the top take the southern slopes. See more..

    Architectural Complex Citadel Naryn-Kala image
One of the most famous sights of Dagestan. The is surrounded by an ancient high wall with impressive gates. The western gate in this fortress is interesting. They are sometimes called mountain or secret. According to legend, one of the city princes left the city through them, surrendering it to the enemy. Since then, it has been shameful to go out through them even in peacetime. When Peter first visited the fortress, he was told this legend, but he nevertheless went out through them, saying that Muslim customs were not shameful for the Russian Tsar. See more..

Pointers on the top of Mountain Mashuk image
As part of tours Beyond Red Square, our group had a wonderful virtual tour of Pyatigorsk. Five couples loved visiting the historic city of Pyatigorsk, a place most likely none of us would be able to see in our lifetime. Unique to the area are hot mineral springs that led to the development of more than 100 sanatoriums dedicated to all Russians' health. We found it fascinating that the government encouraged its people to travel to the region for treatments at no cost! Our tour guide, Roman, added exciting and entertaining images and commentary on various treatments people received. We can all tell Roman loves his city and is proud of its rich heritage. We all highly recommend this virtual, shared experience with friends and family. See more..

This monument is a sort of holy site for Russians. Lermontov is one of the most treasured Russian poets in history, and so they come here by the busload. You should definitely have someone share the history of his life and work if you visit. It won't mean much to you if you don't know the history. The surrounding area is very beautiful. There is a long road into the woods to go for a walk on or ride a bike on, that many locals visit. The nearby woods are full of spots for doing shashlik (grilling out). It's also close to the city amphitheater for concerts/fireworks on Mt. Mashuk. See more..

    State Philarmonic image
See more..
