Things to do & places to visit in Far Eastern District, Russia

Far Eastern District cover image
Far East Russia is a world apart from the country’s west – almost literally, lying thousands of miles and many time zones away from it. A huge area with rugged mountains and spectacular Pacific Ocean coastline, Far East Russia borders China and North Korea on its south and nearly touches the United States to the northeast. Cities like Vladivostok and Khabarovsk are here, but the glorious natural wonders (like the volcanoes and national parks of the Kamchatka Peninsula) are what draw many.

Far Eastern District #6 destination in Russia 2023. The average rating score is 4.57 based on 21.7k traveler reviews, of 258 attractions. Timezone: Europe/Moscow, current date and time: Sunday, May 05, 2024, 23:09.

It was my second trip to Kamchatka. September 2014. It was sunny weather every day, only one day fog. Great waves on Halaktyrskiy beach. Very consistent beach-break, water ~10 grad celsius. No Hotels on the beach, but you can sleep in camping in tent. September - the best time to visit Kamhatka for surfing.

  9. 4.5 Lighthouse Egersheld (791 reviews)
    - Walking on water
    Lighthouses
    Lighthouse Egersheld image
It is quite a challenge to get to the lighthouse. First, I went all the way to the end stop of a route bus that said "Egerscheldt" (sorry I prefer real German spelling of this name) on a windshield. Then I had to walk to the land's end where the locals park. and then... the most most interesting thing - I had to walk on water. I was a high tide. So that strip of land was barely under water. Everyone was following the same path. So did I. It reminded me of a Biblical scene. See more..

  11. 4.5 Russian Island (760 reviews)
    - Amazing Historical Island
    Islands
    Russian Island image
We spent an interesting day tour with a local military history/archaeological club visiting the incredible Voroshilov Battery No. 981 with its massive battery of six 12 inch naval guns salvaged in the early1930's from a Russian Dreadnought battleship and then visited the huge installation of Fort No. 9. This immense fortification is a marvel of construction with over 7 kms of tunnels many of which it is possible to explore. The tour took us across rough pot holed dirt roads (built in 1910) that criss-cross the island. These sites are an amazing and unique piece of local military history that form a major part of the fortress city of Vladivostok. When you travel across Russian Island it is hard to believe that during the war years over one million trees were felled to enable the defending forces clear lines of sight of the invading enemy...interesting stuff and a "must see" if you are visiting Vladivostok. Bodies of Water
    Golden Horn Bay image
The bay surrounding the coastal city of Vladivostok is quite beautiful and if you can look past the naval dockyards with its cold war relics and modern fleet area you can see that many high rise apartments are being built to take advantage of the surrounding views. There are many inlets to enjoy leaving the port and the sunsets were magnificent. Smaller ferries overloaded with people ply between different parts of the area. We saw it from a cruise ship so we don't know if there are any boat services to take you out on the water but it would be a nice ride. Enjoy your visit! See more..

This park is a real decoration of Khabarovsk. A beautiful view of the Amur River opens from here, you can walk along the alleys, enjoying the green trees and bushes, as well as the monuments that are installed here. So, along a small alley along the museum, sculptures were installed, which used to rise in most parks of the country. Here you can see the famous girl with an oar, young Ulyanov, and other leaders of the Communist Party. Once again you are convinced of how good it is that now they are gone. There are many benches for recreation, and performances are often held in open theaters. See more..
