    - Doable in one day, but exhausting
Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Mountains
    Shirkooh Mountain image
We did manage to reach summit on 28th of Octobre 2017. The weather was lovely, but the trek was exhausting. Not the first part, but the second, where the path from a shelter (at ~3500m ASL) becomes looooong before you reach the summit (4075 m ASL). First part is steep, second is "flat", and that part took the most of our energy. We also felt some height sickness... lungs were short and my head hurt. We started at 6:30, reached summit at 11:00, and came back down at 3:00 PM. Lovely climb, but not that easy. Note that we are regular mountain hikers. See more..

The Jame Mosque or the Congregational Mosque is one of the oldest monuments of the Islamic era in Yazd. An imposing entrance (the tallest of all mosques in Iran) topped by two minarets that dominate the old city. Much of the history of The Mosque dates back to Mongolian times in the 14th century. The monument has been restored several times. The last works were carried out between 1954 and 1986. The reputation of the mosque is due to its Persian blue tiles, its mosaics with various floral and geometric patterns, or its fine ornamentation in brick and terracotta. The water is channeled through a qanat, accessed by a staircase to perform ablution before prayer. jame-mosque-yazd See more..

Museum of Zoroastrians History and Culture image
It is not only because I recruit my tourist guide to-be students here and I like it here, but also because it is a great place to start learning about Zoroastrians in Yazd comprehensively. Aside from the two other Zoroastrian sights, Towers of Silence and Fire Temple, you can learn all about Zoroastrians here, come to a general understanding of where they live, where their temples are in Yazd province, how they practice, where they practice, what their major traditions and ceremonies are and who Zoroaster was. What is more, there are Zoroastrian guides able to speak fluent English helping you free of charge. What do you think? Hence, I strongly recommend visiting this museum before any other sight of Zoroastrians. To add, I must say that the attractive brick building itself and Mr Markar coming from India who initiated building this orphanage has an interesting story. See more..
  16. 4.5 Sar Yazd Castle (92 reviews)
    - Terrific and here’s my advice
    Historic Sites
    Sar Yazd Castle image
All the adjectives have been used in previous reports. Here’s my tips for independent travellers instead (a.) Go on a Friday which is the Iranian day off if you can. We were there on a Friday and there was just us two and a family from Germany (b.) Combine the journey from Yazd to the fortress with a side-trip to the village of Fahraj. It’s only a 15 minute diversion. Sorry I can’t find Fahraj on Trip Advisor but there’s plenty of guff if you google. It houses one of the oldest mosques in the world and it’s like going back in time. It’s also not on the rent-a-crowd bus trip circuit (c.) Hire a taxi driver from your hotel to take you to the castle and then Fahraj. We paid USD 50 (or was it USD 40?) plus a tip for about 4 hours. 17. 4.5 Pigeon Tower (76 reviews)
    - Fabulous restored khaboutar khaneh (pigeon house)
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Pigeon Tower image
I've seen many pigeon houses (and excavated one!), but none anywhere near as impressive as this. It was designed to house some 4000 pigeons for collecting both the eggs and the guano. The pigeon boxes are arranged on transverse vanes extending from the central space to an outer ring of pigeon boxes. The only entrance for the pigeons was through an opening in the top of the tower. For those charged with managing the collection of guano etc, thin discs of alabaster were let into the 1st storey floor to allow light to enter the ground floor. A brilliant and remarkable structure beautifully restored. See more..
  18. 4.5 Aghazade Mansion (40 reviews)
    - Charming former merchant's mansion, now a good restaurant. Well worth a visit.
Saturday: 8:30 AM - 8:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Architectural Buildings
    Aghazade Mansion image
We stopped here for lunch on our way to Yazd, and what a gem this place is. Our lunch was a tasty simple affair of kebabs with salad, but it is the building which is the star of the show. Circa 200 years old,it has been partly renovated, the biruni, or public quarters now converted to form the restaurant. Typical of Persian merchant houses, the courtyard has a sunken pool with raised eating areas at either end where the former reception rooms were. You can ascend to the roof which has a unique double badgir (wind tower) and view the still ruinous andaruni, (private area) of the former merchant's family. Abarqu was struck by an earthquake in the C19th, and you can see that many adjacent buildings were badly damaged and have not recovered. See more..

Zurkhane which literally means the house of strength is a place for men to practice a form of Persian martial arts. It is located in an ally-way just north of Amir Chakhmagh Square. It is open to tourists and not only can you observe this combination of dancing and weightlifting activity that is steeped in Shi’ite mysticism, but also investigate the 15th-century water tank housed beneath the building, and experience the cooling effects of Yazdi badgirs (wind-catchers) first-hand. This was the former residence of the Persian regent Karim Khan Zand. The pavilion is superb with 4 rooms off of a central courtyard, each ablaze with light shining through coloured glass. Atop this is the loftiest badgir in Iran at 33m tall. The pool in front of the pavilion contains several working fountains, but the garden with its orange, pomegranate and evergreen trees is very plain. See more..

Yazd, the city surrounded by mountains, has been important Zoroastrian center since Sasanian times. In the 10th century it was noted as being a prosperous city standing at the crossroads of the most important caravan routes from Central Asia to the west. In this beautiful square the stunning three-storey facade of the Tekieh (a building used during the rituals to commemorate the third Shia Imam) dominates the surrounding buildings. The best time to visit this monument is around sunset when the light softens. Take your time and enjoy your visit. See more..

  30. 4.0 Narein Castle (113 reviews)
    - Fairly well-preserved castle.
    Spent 1-2 hours Castles
    Narein Castle image
Considering that the castle is constructed from mud-brick, it is remarkably well-preserved. Much of the decorative detail is still in evidence, particularly around the entrance gate. Originally there were 3 outer walls beyond the moat, but now only part of the inner and middle walls survive, the latter being some 10m high. One can enter the keep which has a few plain rooms with windows high up. For those with mobility issues, although there are steps within, it would not be too difficult to get around. See more..
