   This is a good museum to visit. But you have to make an appointment before you go. There are many animal specimens (vertebrates, birds, etc.), soil samples, plant fossils. It shows you the whole geographic feature of Xinjiang, how people overcame the desert condition. It is free. See more..

   We did enjoy very much the hours we spent at Tianshan Grand Canyon - although we took the shuttle bus inside of the natural reserve, we realized that taking the own car enables you to stop at a lot of more interesting spots on the way up the mountain. Unfortunately, the lake on top of the mountain is rather polluted, however, for peope enjoying nature, the overall park is a great place to be. See more..

   JuHuaTai used to be a fantastically unspoilt walk up through a pine forest to reach a spot where the panorama in front of you was pretty much unequalled in South Mountain. Now unfortunately the brand new road which has replaced a wooded track beside the river has made the day trip about as ordinary as it could be and given the area access to boy-racers of all ages in their four-wheel drives out to impress the girlfriend for the day. Go in winter when at least the new road will be obliterated by snow and the boy racers are less likely to want to risk frostbite. See more..

   This is a great place to visit. Turpan's Jiaohe and Gaochang ruins are certainly bigger and better, but if you are in Urumqi you can't do better than coming here for a morning or afternoon adventure. Apparently, it dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). What you see is probably much later, sometime in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). (From Urumqi take the BRT 3, then the 528a bus, then the 312 bus. After this, you can either walk for about about 45 minutes or get a ride by a local person. They might charge you 10 rmb. Hey, walking is fun and good for you. The locals are friendly. It's an adventure. You wouldn't come here if you weren't an adventurer, would you?.) See more..

   Very pretty area up the valley, but narrow area without much scope for hiking. Best for a big group day out - Big parking lot; buy entry ticket, walk up the road to a big eating area with many yurts, take a shuttle (buy ticket on shuttle) or walk the maybe 3 kms up a road by the river to the water fall, pose for photos, walk or ride a horse back to the yurt area, eat and drink. The walk is on a paved road and there is the occasional car, horse and shuttle cart that you have to get out of the way for. There is a fenced horse track on the hill side almost back to eating area if you want to ride a horse on the grass. For a quiet picnic, there is one place you can climb the scree hill opposite the waterfall, where there isn't actually a sign saying no climbing. Over the crest is a pretty small valley with a stream and the area is minimally trashed. See more..

   Not a lot here except a pendulum denoting the centre of Central Asia. Everything is a bit tired-a few displays to brighten up an otherwise uninspiring spot in the middle of a dry plain.
