Very special. Small compact cemetry with court yards, nearly no visitors. Amazing gravings. Wooden artefacts intact and seem very old. Beautiful windows in the maseoleum. Fantastic restaurant behind maesoleum in large gold building with many nooks and crannys and photo menu with great food. See more..

Yarkant (Shache) town centre hums with activity. Metalsmiths grinding and making tools throw sparks in to the road which is full of 2 wheeled, 4 whelled and 4 legged transport vying for position. The centre is busy, bustling and polluted with great street food and little restaurants along all the central roads (some delicacies include animal hearts etc but lots of more familiar food also). Lots of barrows with the fantastic Xinjiang cakes and biscuits, about 20 kuai for one liang of the Xinjiangese sweet biscuit with honey, dates etc that is very expensive outside of Xinjiang. Work out the town a little in to the side roads and lots of stunning and interesting old homes are dotted around the drabber new buildings. Yarkunt is lively and fun, foreigners will get bit of attention here and there but not as much as in BJ/SH/GZ etc. Han Chinese visitors to this Uighur side of town would be advised to stick close with International travel companions if they have them. All resident Han we talked to rarely if ever left the newbuild alternative centre of Yarkant to visit the real centre around DiYiJie so they may have good reason, this sid it is very cosmopolitan with people from all the nationalities from the close by passes presents- meaning big variety of Central Asian dishes/restaurants nearby. Foreigners are only supposed to stay in the big hotel near the hospital and get permission first so get the accomodation sorted as soon as you arrive to save getting caught short later. See more..
  3. 4.0 Altyn Mosque (1 review)
    - One of the sights no to miss on the square

    Altyn Mosque image
The Altyn Mosque ( 阿爾丁清真寺;) is a mosque in Yarkand. The mosque is located (N 38.415600 E 77.257900) on the square – the Al Tun Historical and Cultural plaza - where you also find the Mausoleum of Amannisa Khan and the photogenic City palace of Yarkand. The mosque is located on the east side of the A Le Tun road, about 200 meters north of the crossing of Lao Cheng road. Beyond the mosque is a cemetery housing the tombs of the Khans of Yarkand. Because we visited Yarkand late in the afternoon, the mosque was closed and we only have seen the exterior. The painted ceilings, we unfortunately couldn’t see. A visit to the mosque is a must see because it is one of the nice buildings around the square; the mosque and those other buildings form to my opinion the highlight of Yarkand. See more..
