   Hotan is a small city in the west of Xinjiang, things are quite different here from Urumqi or the rest of China! Two most do there are 1. try the roasted chicken and lamb near the big mosque. 2. And do a desert trip, we found our guide recommended on line and lucky us he was free that day. Kurban is a great tour guide he speaks really good English and knows the area very well. We started at 5pm from Hotan (Hetian) and around 6 arrive to the camel station. We rode camels for about two hours until we found the perfect spot to camp! All equipment and dinner was provided for us by Kurban.    This night market at the corner Tayani S Road and S Ring Road is in a long hall with red letters above the security guarded entrance. Inside there are probably hundreds of stalls offering all kinds of local food and drinks (including cold beer etc). It's easy to see what is offered, and easy to select. I can recommend the lamb skewers and scallion pancakes. You can buy different food and drinks from multiple outlets and then sit and eat at one of the tables behind the shops. It's great to get in contact with the very friendly local people. It's bustling and busy but very friendly and safe and it get's quieter after 9pm (on a weekday) and it's easy to get a table.    This is a little difficult to find but if you take the number five bus and ask to be let off near Jiya ( the atlas silk village) you then can hitch a lift to the Tomb. Thursday's is best or any time in May when everyone converges on it. You see all kinds of people stepped in Islamic Sufism and folk beliefs coming to slaughter chickens and appease the various spirits. Some are terrified by demonic possession, some ask for children or wives or husbands. Some come to curse family members. Every spectrum of Islamic belief is here.    As I went around seeing the sites in Hotan and Kuche, I couldn't believe that no other foreigners were there. Hotan is where Buddhism first arrived in China, it is where Jade is still found in the river, there are ruins all over the place, plus it is one of the only places you can go camel riding for more than 30 minutes at a time. It is a natural environment. There are things out there that haven't been discovered yet. The museums are great, and they are still practicing some of the crafts that made the silk road great. It is well worth seeing. I did a day tour with Kurban, who runs southernsilkroadtours and he was excellent. He can also do camel trekking and tours of other areas. He is a great find. See more..

   it is impressing as a monument, but the nicest thing is the story behind the statues and the structures, it is the story of an old men, who was the follower of MAO TSE DONG , and traveled with his donkey, all the way from Hotan to Beijing to meet the leader and became a national hero.
