Richard was recommended to us by a friend when we were days from the start of our Dunhuang - Xining Silk Road trip. We had originally planned to look after ourselves for the trip but after enquiring with Richard it became obvious that using his services was the smart option. He promptly replied with a proposed itinerary, as well as a quote for a car and driver at each of our destinations which was surprisingly reasonable. Throughout the trip Richard swiftly answered any questions we had on wechat and everything went extremely smoothly. He is extremely knowledgeable about the area and we felt safe under his guidance. Highly recommend.See more..
5.0Zhagana Stone Mountains(18 reviews) - Top hike in southern Gansu Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Mountains • Nature & Wildlife Areas
The big trail loop makes a fantastic day hike. The whole loop is about 16 miles. You go from 2800m to 3800m altitude and down. The descent is steep--either loose stones or muddy horse trail, have to cross streams often. Carry a walking stick! The whole loop took me about 10 hours with frequent stops for taking pictures.See more..

5.0Army Horse Rance of Shandan(4 reviews) - Horse farm with long history and great scenery Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Nature & Wildlife Areas • Horse Tracks
Stayed at the Huaiqi Resort Village for a night during my Hexi Corridor tour. This is supposed to be the oldest horse farm which is continuously administered by governments from various dynasties and I'm told more than 2000 years old. Journey to this place is quite terrible, the small country road is full of port holes and long journey surrounded by fields of farms though beautiful, large vegetable old producing yellow flowers. Took us 4 hours from Zhangye to get to the farm. Once you get there, even before reaching the resort, you forget the pain of travel and mesmerised by the beauty of the place, we saw a couple of rider going along a lakeshore, absolutely stunning picture. The place is quite cooling and cold at night even in July. A fantastic resort village with long wooden houses and room that provides almost everything a 5 star hotel do. Resort ground is nicely landscaped with wild flowers and plants. There is a restaurant and a bar that's big enough to serve as a dance floor if needed and equipped with Kareoke. The rooms are nicely decorated with Internet TVs and Wifi. Behind the hotel, up on a grass land on higher ground, we rode horses while soaking in the beautiful mountains and grassland filled with wild flowers. Tall pine trees covered some of the hills. Reminds me of Alpine region. At night we have a camp fire outside the main entrance with music, every one danced. Outside the resort, view is just breath taking. Low lying trees, endless green grass lands, rolling green hills ending in distant mountains. We hike up the hills behind the resort and spend the whole morning enjoying this beautiful country.See more..
See more..
See more..
5.0Mt. See more..
5.0Shengrong Pagoda(1 review) Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
This museum promises to be a wonderful world class exhibition when it opens. It may not open for another two years. However, a local successful business person has a private museum on the top floors of the antique market which is not too far from here. The preservation of Chinese culture is a personal interest of his. Interesting discoveries in very old jade and ceramic found in the area are exhibited. There are also some more modern paintings and calligraphy on display. If you are lucky and can speak Chinese, you may be able to have a conversation with the owner--a very interesting person.See more..

In April last year I went with some friends to visit the Dadosi Big Sitting Buddha Temple in Shandan as I had been told of it's significance by some Chinese friends. The Temple is amazingly well preserved, considering that it dates from the Ming Dynasty (the early fifteenth century).Access to the Temple by bus is easy.I would recommend this Temple to anyone interested in Buddhism and or Religious Studies in general or anyone with an interest in Chinese history. Excellent museum that’s not well known but definitely worth a visit when in Zhangye. Close to the reclining Buddha. Artifacts of different periods are well displayed and explained in Chinese, often with good English translation. The museum is free, just bring your passport for registration. Floor -1 has a nice little exhibition on the Silk Road and Dunhuang heritage.See more..
5.0Jiayuguan City Museum(1 review) - Finding out about China's remote steel city Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours History Museums People go to Jiayuguan to see the western end of the Great Wall. But the city itself was born in the 1950s, on the back of vast local deposits of coal and iron ore. The city museum explains how the city started, what it was like in the early days and where it is going. All the introductions, and the object labels, are in English as well as Chinese. Highlights include a massive model of the city and reconstructions of steelworkers' homes in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Entry is free, but you need to pick up a ticket at the gatehouse.See more..
This is very off the beaten track and you will need to ask a driver to take you there because it is not an active tourist site. Hidden in farm fields of corn, pumpkin and sunflowers lies the enormous and very striking ruin of this castle. It's quite near the Wei Jin Tomb site and I'm sure your driver can take you for no extra, just be sure to negotiate a flat rate for both to start. Also ask to stop and buy watermelon as it is grown here and was excellent in late July!See more..
