You have to drive a bit by bus, but you can do the trip from Lanzhou City in one day. I met a group of locals on my trip and just joined them. Buy a ticket at the foot of the mountain and start climbing, it is not too exhausting. There are several spots on your way to the top: buddhist temples and also - now read exclusively here - the real tomb of Dschinghis Khan! In Hohot, Inner Mongolia is the big museum of Dschinghis Khan but it is a Cenotaph, he is not buried there. Here is the Place where the historians found out he is really buried. A yurt is there to remind of the great leader. Further on your way you will find the place is full of green trees and plants and this is what you just don't expect near Lanzhou, where the desert isn't far. The view on the top is amazing.
