  3. 4.0 Dafo Temple of Zhangye (130 reviews)
    - Marco Polo’s own review of this temple
Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Religious Sites
    Dafo Temple of Zhangye image
Here’s Marco Polo’s review of this very temple, from around 800 years ago: “The people are Idolaters, Saracens, and Christians, and the latter have three very fine churches in the city, whilst the Idolaters have many minsters and abbeys after their fashion. In these they have an enormous number of idols, both small and great, certain of the latter being a good ten paces in stature; some of them being of wood, others of clay, and others yet of stone. They are all highly polished, and then covered with gold. The great idols of which I speak lie at length. And round about them there are other figures of considerable size, as if adoring and paying homage before them.” See more..
  4. 4.5 Maiji Shan Caves (125 reviews)
    - Don't be old!

    Maiji Shan Caves image
First time I went two years ago we were dropped off at the foot of the mountain. The climb killed me. This time we were independent. Despite taking the bus from the entrance we were still left with a mountain to climb before getting to the mountain! Fitness and health are all in this endeavour. Allow at least two hours from drop off at the entrance to getting back to your taxi or whatever. See more..
  5. 4.5 Bingling Temple Grottoes (82 reviews)
    - A great adventure with stunning scenery!
Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Religious Sites
    Bingling Temple Grottoes image
A bit of an adventure trying to see these grottos but well worth it! The speed boat was a brilliant ride, seeing some stunning scenery along the way, and the wind blowing through your hair only added to the experience. Note - it is not a speedboat like on the films, instead a 9 seater enclosed mini boat which crashes against waves - but with the windows open you can you use your imagination and pretend! 40 minutes later we arrived and had a lovely walk around the grottos, saw the giant buddah and the amazing mountain scenery. Make sure you buy your ticket down where the boats arrive, you can't actually buy a ticket at the entrance. It is all outside, mini caves containing various religious statues. An interesting place to see off the beaten track - away from main tourist routes! A must see if you are in this area See more..
  6. 4.5 Langmu Temple (50 reviews)
    - There are two temples (gompas) in Langmusi
Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Religious Sites
    Langmu Temple image
It is unfortunate that TripAdvisor lists "Langmu Temple" as if there is only one temple in town, but there are actually two distinct, independent temples with very different architectural structure (not to mention separate entrance fees). Serti gompa: the shiny gold temples to the north. Kerti gompa: the wooden, seemingly run-down temples to the south. Kerti is the original temple of the town, but Serti was constructed with financial support from the Chinese government. Note that the entrance to Namo Gorge (which is unfortunately unlisted on TripAdvisor; it is quite beautiful) is behind Kerti Gompa. It is possible to go independently, but plan at least 4 hours to explore the gorge and come back. Make SURE that you come back before it starts to become dark, as the Tibetan nomads who live in tents in the gorge will unchain their dogs at night to protect the livestock. See more..
  7. 4.5 Wei-Jin Tombs (39 reviews)
    - Spectacular, beautiful impressions from the Wei-Jin period
Wednesday: 8:30 AM - 8:00 PM Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Cemeteries • Religious Sites
    Wei-Jin Tombs image
Spectacular tomb ruins from the Wei-Jin period that somehow seem to get little attention. The little museum and preserved brick paintings are stunning. Tomb no. 6 (only one you can visit) show scenes from daily life of the couple in the middle chamber (women on the left, men on the right; in three stages youth - adult - old age). The local gatekeeper can explain many details and the shop outside has souvenirs from the 80s with historic value. See more..

    Muta Temple image
Reached on 21st Sep afternoon abt 3pm. Paid RMB$13.50 to climb the temple. Nothing really interesting, the writings on the walls are brief. Climbing up to the top wasnt too diffcult. Not too high either. At the top was disappointed that the view was blocked by the protectice metal gauze. Not too nice for a paranoidic view. Short trip, looks much better from the outside than inside. Give a 3 because if its rich history See more..

  10. 4.5 Dunhuang Leiyin Temple (21 reviews)
    - Beautiful Buddhist temple complex in Dunhuang
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Religious Sites
    Dunhuang Leiyin Temple image
Dunhuang was my first stop during my trip to the Silk Road. Dunhuang is a small town but very rich in the history of the Silk Road, and is home to extraordinary sites with Buddhist art. The Lei Yin temple complex is located inside the town of Dunhuang, and is easily accessible from several nearby hotels. The complex consists of several temples with Buddhist art, all of which are very well preserved. Worth a visit! I highly recommend contacting China Highlights, who organized my tailor-made itinerary to the Silk Road in China. See more..
  11. 4.0 Fuxi Temple (19 reviews)
    - An interesting and informative visit!
Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Historic Sites • Religious Sites
    Fuxi Temple image
I am not a believer of Taoism but this temple was a highlight in my Silk Road trip! Our tour guide is a well-read girl and she explained the basic stuff about Yin and Yang. The signs of Bagua (八卦,Eight Diagrams) are actually good advice for our lives: Be patient in wait and be modest at success, and how people should respect nature and stuff. Really made me feel proud of being a Chinese! If you don't know anything about Yin and Yang, this is a good place to learn. If you are not interested in it at all, go outside to the vast public ground and watch how locals spend their afternoon. At the corner of the public ground there was an old men selling Guagua (呱呱, a noodle-like snack made of buckwheat). He was so nice and told me a lot of stories, including the legend of Guagua and making process. See more..

    Milariba Buddha Pavilion image
I wouldn't go out of my way to visit, but if you get stuck in town (like we did) or if you have to transfer, it is definitely worth it to visit the Milarepa tower. A taxi from the busstation takes 5 minutes (4 RMB) and visiting the tower costs 20 RMB and will not take more than an hour. If you get lucky you'll find monks praying on the ground floor and all 9 floors have beautiful paintings, statues and other Tibetan artefacts. See more..
  15. 4.5 Luoshi Pagoda (9 reviews)
    - A really nice temple
Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Observation Decks & Towers • Religious Sites
    Luoshi Pagoda image
It’s been a while since I saw a temple that I liked as much as this. It is calm and peaceful. There is the pagoda but the surrounding buildings is worth a visit as well. During my visit, right before lunchtime, it was not at all crowded. There was some constructions around the area and around one building on the temple grounds, but there are plenty of buildings to go around so that’s no biggie! The city gate is close by and you’ll pass some interesting genuine “old” Chinese quarters on your way, just keep your eyes open! See more..
  16. 4.0 Baiyun Taoist Temple of Lanzhou (8 reviews)
    - Confused?
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Religious Sites
Baiyun Taoist Temple of Lanzhou image
The photos that have been uploaded to this listing are of the temple located in Baitashan Park, about mid way from the street entrance to the park to the White Pagoda Temple. In fact, the "Baiyun Taoist Temple" isn't on any map either, as it's universally known as the White Cloud Temple. If you can figure all that out from this poor listing by TripAdvisor, the white cloud temple is a must see in Lanzhou without a doubt. It's free to visit and is a fully functioning, working temple, with services and worshippers at all times of the day. The clouds of incense smoke might be where it gets it's name from. Well worth seeking out. See more..

    Tianshui Immortal Cliff image
We changed our plan to visit this place when the Maijishan Grottoes was closed because of the rain, and we found a real hidden gem. Or I have to say, so far it is a hidden beauty! It is on the construction, sooner or later it will become another tourist attraction. Now you can see the ancient temples, statues, caves in bad but real condition. I hope the construction will not affect too much about the original buildings, however, what I could see was the temples are becoming quite new. I will suggest to come as soon as possible to see this hidden gem! See more..

See more..

  21. 4.0 Yuquan Taoist Temple (4 reviews)
    - Well worth the journey
Wednesday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Religious Sites
    Yuquan Taoist Temple image
This is not just a single temple but a stunningly beautiful mountainside with walks through wooded areas and alongside lakes with many shrines and photogenic buildings and bridges. The nearby village seems to exist purely on the sale of incense which is burnt in vast quantities outside the temple. A small monk walks around chanting while carrying a large stone above his head. He's quite happy to let visitors try to lift it, it's heavy! Lots to see and there is a small area of street food carts if hunger sets in. This attraction is some distance from Yichang but well worth a visit. See more..

After being dropped to Xiahe we headed back to the festival in local taxi we picked on the road (32km /100 rmb return trip and wait for around 3 hrs)...It is beautiful temple and friendly monks invited us to see the ceremonies....later we had walked through the camping site and have an brief insight in nomads lifes....on any other day, this monastery would make a nice stop for few hours. 23. 4.0 Linxia Nanguan Mosque (3 reviews)
    - A chinese architectural mosque of great antiquity
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Historic Sites • Religious Sites
    Linxia Nanguan Mosque image
Linxia is also called little Mecca because of its high proportion of Muslims in the population and it has this very old mosque built in Chinese style - especially the entrance. We had to wait for Friday prayers to finish before we could enter and then we were allocated a young guide who was the current protector of the mausoleum relating to the mosque's founder who introduced Islam to this area 1500 years ago. Outside I noticed older women with pink fez on their heads and asked our guide what they signified. None of us had seen anything like it - he went and asked one of the mosque attendants and he said the pink fez can only be worn by women who are the head (read boss) of the family. All along the roads in and out of Linxia were mosques or prayer halls - all with brightly coloured domes and minarets - every few hundred metres. We could not find out why as this was the country - rural farmers. See more..

  30. 4.0 Gongbei Building of Mosque (1 review)
    - Unplanned visit to HQ of Qadiriyyah school of Islam
Wednesday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
    Gongbei Building of Mosque image
Gongbei is a term used by Hui people in Northwest China for an Islamic shrine complex centred on the grave of a Sufi master. The Da Gongbei Mosque in Linxia contains the remains of Khawaja Abdul-Allah a descendent of the Prophet and an important leader of the Qadiriyya order of Islam. There are some intricate and delicate stone carvings on the front gate of the Mosque that are worth a look. The architecture overall is in the Chinese style of Islam, more colourful than many of the Islamic buildings further west in Iran and Turkey. The Main Prayer Hall in particular has some lovely colourful detailing on the roof eaves. See more..

One member of our group really wanted to go there. We got directions from our hotel and were warned about the bad road conditions. It was a snowy day (in mid-May) making visibility difficult and the potholes were filled, making it difficult to figure out how deep they were. We did 20 of the 35 km to get there and turned back as the road became really bad and was blocked. All was not lost as were came across a few herds of yaks and goats crossing the road and some nice scenery through the snow. The whole thing took nearly two hours. See more..
