Spectacular, beautiful impressions from the Wei-Jin period

Spectacular tomb ruins from the Wei-Jin period that somehow seem to get little attention. The little museum and preserved brick paintings are stunning. Tomb no. 6 (only one you can visit) show scenes from daily life of the couple in the middle chamber (women on the left, men on the right; in three stages youth - adult - old age). The local gatekeeper can explain many details and the shop outside has souvenirs from the 80s with historic value.

    Painted tiles on the walls
I got to the tombs by paying 80 RMB for a taxi trip. No one else was there when I was. The museum has a nice display of painted tiles that can be photographed, as no photos are allowed in the cave. The painted tiles in each of the cave's three rooms have a different focus. They are simple but amazing. It's a bit out of the city, but it's worth the trip and doesn't take much time.

    Small, simple but unique
A series of tombs which belonged to a noble family. Only one is open. But on my whole Silk Road trip, we did not come across another tomb with these unique features or art. The tomb is built with an inner chamber with drawings depicting activities within a household. Next in the outer chamber, are brick drawings depicting the life outside it's wall. As there were no crowds, the curator was ready to discuss and talk abt the murals, giving us a close and detailed view of the drawings. The general area gives us a good idea of how tombs can only be identified by mounds on the ground. This tomb is at least a couple of stories down.
