We were walking from our hotel and noticed this motor museum in Hastings. The owner himself, Bill Mallalieu, showed around his amazing collection. My husband enjoyed talking to Bill about his varied car collection as well pictures, memorablia and his memories. They also discussed at length the demise of the great British car industry. This was our local beach as we were staying about a 10-minute walk away. There is parking around the area if you drive there. Lots of sun beds and umbrellas for hire (allow about $15 per day) and the sand is fine, the sea turquoise and warm. The boardwalk is a great place to go for a walk right by the coast. The surface is in good repair and well maintained. The constant presence of the trade winds helps keep you refreshed. There is a good variety of restaurants and other attractions right next to it. When it gets too hot, just look for the shady areas. A lovely white-painted church was built in 1837, on a small rise in the heart of today’s infamous St. Lawrence Gap. It seems an odd place for it to be the church to be surrounded by dozens of bars and restaurants. But in the past, this area was called Bath Village and the Church/school was built to reduce the distance the local people had to walk to pray. From its early years as a chapel to present times, it has been renovated and added on numerous times. St. Lawrence Church today is probably the oldest, most traditional church building in the surrounding area. The sound of the sea crashing on the rocks below complements the choir, and the gentle Seabreeze flowing through the open church windows gives a peaceful and spiritual feeling.
