- 4.5 Nationalpark Neusiedler See – Seewinkel (137 reviews)
-Wonderful Neusiedler See
Spent 2-3 hours National Parks
Normally one associates Austria with mountains but the entire area of Burgenland is a truly amazing wonder in Europe. There are vineyards, protected birds, miles and miles of biking routes and the friendliest people. It is a truly wonderful place for a family vacation. It is close to Vienna but do not go just for a day. Book a room in the town of Neusiedl or Weiden and spend at least several days exploring the area. If you wish to travel around the whole lake you will also pay a visit to Hungary. The whole area is better than all the mountains of Europe. See more..

- 4.5 Bergkirche (66 reviews)
-Heaven, Haydn and Stations
Historic Sites • Religious Sites
My initial visit here was because of the classical composer Joseph Haydn. Haydn was the court composer at the Esterházy Palace (Schloss) in Esienstadt for literally decades. As part of his work for the Prince, he also wrote church music for the local church, and this was Haydn's church there. The church inside is very lovely, moderate size inside. There are a couple of things that are very outstanding here. The church contains a mausoleum and Haydn was ultimately brought to rest here after being buried elsewhere for many years. The organ in the choir loft is the very one that Haydn played, and is still being used. When you look at the outside of the church, the shape seems quite odd, and the interior of the church quite small for the size of the structure. The reason for this was the addition of a 24 stations of the cross venue that has literally wrapped itself up and down and around the church. As reverent as it was to see Haydn's tomb, I have just never seen anything like these stations. The best I can describe it, is as if it is a stone grotto built around the church. Each station has one or more life sized plaster statues illustrating the station. The church was built evidently in the early 1700's. These stations start behind the altar of the church rather downstairs, and following the stations will take you literally around the church, outside, up another story or two outside and back around. It was simply stunning is all I can say. The statuary, expressions, setting, literally left me speechless, no small task! The church is open to visitors. We were there on a Sunday for a Mass, and could not see the chapel as well because another service was going on in there as well. See more..

Good for family visit See more..

- 4.5 Burg Güssing (57 reviews)
-Family reunion
Wednesday: Castles
THE HISTORY OF THE CASTLE OF GÜSSINGIn 1157 Güssing is already being mentioned and documented. After three versatile centuries under different dynasties, Güssing, Német-Ujvár, - on 30th of June 1524 - is being obtained by the Batthyánys, who nearly half a millennium later until this day, are connected and associated with the castle of Güssing and also carry Német-Ujvár as part of their family name. Hungarian King Géza II in 1157 called Count Wolfer probably coming from Hainburg on the Danube to Güssing and presented him with mountain Kyscen and the surrounding area. The first wooden castle and monastery is being said to been built by Count Wolfer, it is thought though that the first build-ing owners of castle and monastery were the Benedictines. Already that time the name of the pilgrimage church of Our Holy Mary of Snow is being mentioned, which is today?s Castle chapel. King Béla III finally had built a strong castle of stone. Since then Güssing being called Novum Castrum, (Ujvár = New Castle, from which Német Ujvár in Hungarian is taken) documented in 1198. 1246 King Béla IV for a brief period of time entrusted the castle to the Order of Saint John (1246) and later to his treasurer Mauricius (1263). 1272 Heinrich II from the dynasty of the Counts of Güssing and a descendant of the first owner Wolfer has been documented as new owner of Güssing. The family though specially so called Ivan the terrible had been involved in several wars against the royal dynasties. They conducted wild raids and were the cause of widespread unrest in the area. Finally, in 1289/90 Duke Albrecht deprived the counts of Güssing of their power with the permission of Ladislaus IV. Under King Sigismund 1391 the castle went to the dynasty of Cheh de Sáró and Léva. Their descendants however were involved in such heavy debts that all their assets had to be mortgaged and therefore Nikolaus Ujlaki in 1458 came into possession of castle and rule of Güssing. In 1459 those Magnates who were not s... See more..

- 4.5 Oper im Steinbruch St. Margarethen - Romersteinbruch (43 reviews)
-A wonderful production of the Magic Flute
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Theaters
Our frinds bought tickets and took us there. All set in a former quarry and outdoors. Good facilities - free and adequate parking, bars, snacks, souvenirs, and excellent, clean public toilets. Spectacular production and the voices of the singers were simply the best. Special effects were super. First time in our lives that we have sat for 2.5 hours in a raging thunderstorm and pouring rain. (We must be crazy) Interestingly very few people left so almost 2,000 other people remained and enjoyed the production in spite of the horrible weather. Highly recommended. First class production. - 4.5 Basilika Frauenkirchen (35 reviews)
-An Exquisite Architectural Basilica in a Tiny Town
Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
We were taking a trip into our ancestral past and one of my Burgenland gggrandmothers was from this parish. This church is incredibly different from the other smaller churches in the surrounding towns where the majority of my paternal family originated. The interior is overwhelmingly beautiful, with exquisite detail everywhere you look. Just to sit in a pew and FEEL the awesome beauty was a powerful experience! Clearly the population was devoted to Our Lady and willing to spare no expense to honor her. For art historians, artists, architects, history buffs, etc., this is a MUST visit basilca, and one of a kind in rural Burgenland wine country. See more..

- 4.5 Strandbad Neusiedl am See (31 reviews)
-Clean, great for kids and families
Spent More than 3 hours Sports Complexes
There are only a few beaches around the lake. This is one of those we visited with my son. It was not full, so we had enough space to feel free. There are small pools for small kids to play around, but the water is pretty cold in those. :) Small playground with basic equipment, beautiful green grass. Entrance fee is reasonable. It's about 15 min walk from the town center. See more..

- 4.5 Schlosspark Eisenstadt (27 reviews)
-Splendid in Springtime
Spent More than 3 hours Parks
It's a place where locals retreat to to enjoy the first sunrays spring - and since Eisenstadt is fairly small, considering that it's a provincial capital, it's far from crowded. There are small ponds with ducks and fish, great picknick spots, gentle walkways and monuments to look at... See more..
- 4.5 Lake Neusiedl (26 reviews)
-Ideal place for nice memories from a beautiful spring day
Bodies of Water
This lake is located in Austria and Hungary and its north area is only 40km away from Bratislava. Its ideal for windsurfing, sailing... I would not recommend to swim there, despite I saw a beach aimed for this purpose, as its water is too muddy. On the other hand there are places where you will spend nice moments with your family, friends or children. We’ve been to Neusiedl am See waterside and there are restaurants, coffees, pubs, playgrounds and many entertainment zones. What is in my opinion its best value is the bike road which is built along the lake where you can enjoy the day in a more active manner (either on bike or with rollers). This is the place where I will certainly return. See more..
- 4.5 Friedensburg Schlaining (23 reviews)
-Wheelchair Visit.
Spent 2-3 hours Speciality Museums • Castles
We were here for a short visit, I use a wheelchair, and we got a nice discount. First time a "castle" is 95% accessible. COMPLIMENTS!!! A little elevator outside, and a normal one inside, which made sure that I could see pretty much everything. Braille on the stairs, a rescue chair right next to the elevator, ramps, an accessible toilet. What more could I want. Well, let me tell you... nothing. More than satisfied, would 100% recommend. Way beyond expectations! ( oh...and inside was very pretty, and informative as well ;) ) See more..

- 4.5 Weingut Kracher (21 reviews)
-Wonderful property and great tasting
Wineries & Vineyards
Visiting this winery was the highlight of our weekend trip, especially so that it was unplanned and we went in just because we were passing by and it was open. The property is beautiful with great outdoor sitting area. There is also a small kids area with a slide and swings (crucial if you have a kid!). The wine list to taste is impressive. They had for sure 30 wines to taste. They specialize on sweet wines but they are also offering wines from Schwarz and his reds are seriously impressive. They took all the time with us. We even got fresh baguette and some blue cheese and condiments to match the sweet wines. And all this without charge! Would definitely recommend. See more..
